I'm tired of trying
Your teasing ain't enough

The team was set up back at the office. Their current workspace was within another district's police station. Emily knew from her past work and her newfound experience in this job that more times than not, the team would be working in situations such as this. They would rely on officers to act out the arrests based on their profiling work. The way this unit functioned made sense to Emily; it gave her a sense of routine and comfort that otherwise would not be found in this work area. The entire team aside from Garcia had traveled out for this case. Garcia more or less never traveled with the rest of the time as she has all the equipment necessary from the confines of her office back at Quantico.

Emily walked back from a possible witness's house with fellow agent Reid. The two had been working closely alongside each other since Emily's first day working at the BAU. She didn't consider them close friends but enjoyed listening and talking to Spencer. When she had been set to complete tasks, she felt grateful when this was the pairing that had been decided for her. Spencer was similar to Emily in only a few ways but in ways that mattered to her. The two had some trouble in social situations specifically when it came to new people. Emily had a hard time opening herself up to conversation while Reid loved to our details to the conversation if he had the knowledge to do so. When spending even just minimal time around each other, Emily would relax and let down her walls while listening to Spencer's elaborate rambles.

While returning to the police station, Emily was more withdrawn than usual. Not much but enough for the doctor to take notice. Rather than ignore the quiet from Prentiss and the avoidant replies, Spencer decided to prod the Agent. "Tired?" Spencer quizzed. Emily was already unfocused from the conversation and did not catch what he had said previously or what he was asking now. She looked up from her path in front of her and turned to look at Spencer, sporting a confused look as she let out a 'huh' in response. A small chuckle escaped the Doctor's lips as he shook his head and pointed his focus away from Emily. "I knew you weren't listening" Another wave of laughter slipped out of him, "If I bore you that much-" "No Spencer you don't" Emily quickly interjected.

"I'm just a bit-" "Tired?" Reid asked, once again, interrupting the other agent. Emily let her eyes dart around her field of sight before focusing back on the taller agent and sighing. She was confused by his repetition of 'tired'. "Yeah?" Emily trailed off, leaving a lull of quiet before continuing "Just feeling tired today". The end of the sentence left the two agents walking quietly before Spencer retorted "Thought you might say that". Emily was once again lost at what the other agent was implying. She didn't know quite why she wasn't focused today and 'tired' seemed to be the best way to describe her lack of concentration. She remained quiet as the police station came back into sight. A small cafe was located on the same street as the station which allowed an opportunity for Spencer to turn their attention away from work.

"The coffee in the station isn't the best so it may be best to get them now" He asked splitting between the cafe and the other agent. Emily's focus was not sharp this morning so instead of offering an answer, she instead chose to continue walking, the cafe being her new destination. She opened the door of the cafe, leaving the door open for Reid to eventually catch up with her. She stood at the front, scanning over the menu and landing on the word 'latte'. Emily normally took her coffee black like the majority of the team around her, mostly as it was easiest when working a job like this; easiest coffee to make efficiently with a large group of people. Now with a chance on her own to get a coffee she wanted, she opted for the easiest thing to order quickly.

She asked the man working at the front for a latte and gave her first name ready for it to be called out when Spencer finally walked up beside her. Now the two were reunited, the awkward gaps in conversation reared their head again. Spencer took the same spot at the front and ordered himself a cappuccino before stepping back to stand alongside Prentiss once again. "There is a supposed legend about a goat herder who was the first to realise the potential of coffee beans and..." Emily's mind hadn't wielded enough energy to focus on anything aside from the case and when she was working on the case, nothing else intruded her thoughts. This state of Emily's mind meant that Spencer's ramble about the history of coffee, which she would usually take great interest in, now played and faded into the background as everything else had today.

The barista repeated 'Emily' again, this time allowing Spencer to notice and tap Emily on the shoulder. When she looked up, disrupted by this, Reid simply pointed to wards the man holding her coffee up. Embarrassed by this encounter, Prentiss took her coffee and chose to sit in the cafe rather than immediately make her way back to the station. Shortly after noticing Emily's coffee ready to take, Spencer was able to collect his own drink and take a seat opposite Emily.

The table they were sat at was more private than others in the cafe, st completely at the back with Prentiss taking the sit with her back to the wall. From here she was able to both face Spencer and observe the window. The window displayed the street where the station was and all the traffic of people and cars that littered the street. She placed her hands around the cardboard cup, warming them up and giving her body some form of sensation to focus on. The two agents loomed over their drinks, waiting for them to cool down to drink as a distraction to the silence that kept separating their conversation. Emily's blurry mind finally cleared up enough to process Spencer's earlier words.

"What did you mean before?" Emily prodded the agent as he finally raised his coffee to his lips. He pulled a perplexed and resumed his ramble about coffee's discovery. Emily fought the clouds in her mind and pushed forward through this brain fog. "Why were you amused by me being tired?" As she asked, she continued to formulate different reasons in her mind. She had dwelled on the possible innuendo that could be drawn from this word but that wasn't Spencer's style of humour, at least not to her knowledge. Before she has time to run over other possibilities, Spencer finishes a sip of his drink and holds it to the table. "Two people on the team having been acting distracted today" He pauses which opens up a space for Emily to realise what he is implying but she doesn't, and he carries on. "JJ told Hotch she is just tired today, and for the whole day she has been acting like you" Emily pulls another confused face as Reid begins to list the similarities between the two "Unfocused, distracted, oblivious".

Spencer leaves the comparisons between JJ and Emily there as he continues to take sips of his coffee. Emily leans back in her seat, her chair finally resting on the wall of the cafe. She lets her mind flash back to the stare between her and JJ and wonders why JJ is feeling like this too. Confusion continues for Prentiss as shes unaware of why she is unfocused today and why she feels 'tired'. Maybe, she wonders, does JJ know why her subconscious is playing cruel games on her focus, and is she feeling the same way?
