"The probability of Laurent surviving dropped to about zero."

Even after she was dropped off at home, even after she had washed the ocean water out of her hair, and even after she had settled down in the living room, she was still thinking about Paul Lahote.

What was worse... she didn't even hate it.

She was snuggled on one side of the couch under a blanket she had forced Charlie to buy, and he was on the other end, grumbling about how he would be missing a college basketball game.

"I'm sure Billy will tape it," Will rolled her eyes, clicking for the movie to start. "And you'll love this, it has that one boy, Mcauley Culkin or something?"

Charlie grabbed the container that held the DVD to read the back. "Willow, this is meant for kids."

"It's for kids and up, obviously. Now, will you stop whining and listen, it's starting!"

Charlie glared at her but quickly complied, happy to be spending time with his daughter, no matter how much he pretended to be upset. The beginning scene was of a little girl in a funeral parlor scaring some younger kids by showing them a coffin.

They were both enjoying the movie when the front door burst open, and Bella stomped through with her fists clenched and her mouth set in a grim line.

"Movie over already?" Charlie asked.

"Mike got sick... some kind of stomach flu."

"You okay?"

"I feel fine now," Bella said, her eyebrows furrowing. She had a weak immune system, something like the stomach bug could knock her off her feet for a week.

She walked into the living room, and the younger daughter and father looked at each other and shrugged, going back to watching the movie, where the girl was riding her bike to a doctor's office.

Will heard Bella use the phone - again and again and again. Finally, she couldn't stand it anymore, and she paused the movie. "There you go Dad, you win. Watch your game, we can finish this later."

Charlie nodded, trying to keep the disappointed look off his face.

Will walked into the kitchen and plopped herself down on the counter, right next to Bella so she could hear whoever she was on the phone with.

"Billy, it's me, Bella - Did Jake make it home yet? He left here about twenty minutes ago."

"He's here," came the muffled voice of Billy Black.

"He was supposed to call me. He was getting sick when he left, and I was worried."

"He was... too sick to call. He's not feeling well right now."

Bella gave Will a worried glance. "Let me know if you need any help. Will and I could come down."

"No, no," Billy said much too quickly, "We're fine. Stay at your place."
