"And I thought you were supposed to be good with girls."
Bella parked her truck in the driveway and looked over at her little sister, who was still shaking from what had happened in the woods. She clutched the closed pocketknife to her chest as if a vampire was waiting around every corner to jump out at her, and Bella was pretty sure she saw a tear in the corner of her eye.
"I know you're probably shocked, but -"
"And you aren't?" Will hissed, looking at her sister for the first time since they had gotten in the car. "Why are you acting like what we just experienced was in any way not shocking? That was the least normal thing that could've happened!"
Bella had to take a deep breath so she wouldn't scream at her sister. "Willow. I'm so sorry that happened to you - and I'm even more sorry I couldn't protect you... but you need to calm down."
Will closed her eyes and leaned her head back until it touched the car seat. She took ten deep breaths before opening her eyes and nodding at her sister, and the two girls headed in together.
"Bells? Will?" Charlie asked when he heard the door slam and the bolt locks being turned.
"Yeah, its us," Bella said, voice unsteady.
"Where have you been?" he said, appearing through the kitchen doorway with an ominous expression.
Bella opened her mouth to explain that they had skipped Jess' study party and gone hiking instead, but Will ran forward and threw her arms around Charlie, making him stumble back a step before hugging her back.
Charlie looked up at Bella, and for the first time since her arrival two years ago, he looked angry. He had never seen his daughter act like this before, something serious must have happened.
"We went hiking... and we saw the bear." Bella said, her voice high and shaky. "It's not a bear, though - it's some kind of wolf. And there are five of them. A big black one, and gray, and reddish-brown..."
Charlies eyes grew round with horror and he pushed Will away from him by the shoulders, looking her up and down to see if there were any visible injuries on her. "Are you both okay?"
Will nodded weakly, but she believed it. They were both okay.
"Tell me what happened."
"They didn't pay any attention to Bella and me, they were hunting something... but after they were gone we ran away and got lost on the way back to the truck."
"Wolves," he murmured.
"What?"
"The rangers said the tracks were wrong for a bear - but wolves just don't get that big..."
Bella shook her head. "They were huge."
"How many did you say you saw?"
"Five."
