As the last lesson of the day finally finished, I got my things together and left the building as fast as possible.
I leaned against a tree as I waited for Rep and Midnights to get here. A cool breeze wrapped around my ankles and ruffled my hair, cooling down my warm skin.
My phone vibrated in my hand and I lifted it to check. There was a message from Rep that read, 'going home w Lover, don't wait'.
I thumbs-upped the message and turned my phone off, letting my hand drop to my side again with a small sigh.
When Midnights showed up, there was an expression on her face that looked halfway between nervous and angry. She was looking around, her vigilant eyes taking in the busy surroundings.
"You good?" I asked, as we began to walk toward home.
"Nope," she sighed.
"What's up?"
She immediately brushed it off, "It doesn't matter."
"Well it does, if I can help you out I will."
Midnights went silent and her gaze dropped to the ground. "Actually... maybe it'll be nice to talk about."
Her words caught me slightly off guard, though I made sure I didn't show it. I didn't expect her to actually let me help her, we barely knew each other after all.
"Okay, what's the situation?"
Midnights inhaled quickly and corrected her shoulder posture. "Well, I just had my last class with my ex."
I raised my eyebrows, "Oh."
"Yeah, he's a real shit dude, heaps toxic. We dated for a while then I found out he was actually cheating on me the whole time. I might be mentally fucked up, but even I know my standards and expectations in a relationship."
For some reason, that made my heart constrict in my chest. "That sucks."
Midnights laughed dryly, "and to make it worse, the second I broke up with him he begged for my forgiveness and began harassing me with apologies on every social media platform I had."
"Did you block him?"
"Of course. I knew he had moved schools, but I didn't know he had come here," she huffed. "Fucking annoying."
I nodded slowly. "How did you need my help?"
"Just needed to vent. I haven't told anyone about that before."
"Oh, alright."
We fell into an awkward silence and I fiddled with my fingers. We turned the corner and neared Midnights' house when suddenly a shout from the building caught my attention. Midnights jumped like she'd been shot and immediately looked towards her house.
"Shit, I have to go," she said quickly, stepping backwards. "I'll see you tomorrow."
Without another word, she jogged towards her house. I watched her wrench the door open and hurry inside, slamming the door behind her. I paused; confused and a little scared. There was surely a reasonable explanation for this, surely.
More shouts could be heard before they suddenly stopped, leaving me frozen and perplexed. I forced my legs to keep walking, reminding myself that it wasn't my business and I shouldn't jump to any conclusions.
When I finally closed the door of my house behind me, I exhaled a breath of relief. The scent of something cooking infiltrated my nose and I dumped my bag down to investigate.
My dad was standing by the counter, knife in one hand and the other holding a block of cheese against the breadboard. He looked up as I entered and smiled.
"Hey Eighty, how was school?"
I gave him a small side-hug and stepped back, "it was alright, it's like the holidays never even happened," I sighed.
"Yeah, tends to do that doesn't it." He started to arrange the pieces of cheese onto bowls of hot spaghetti bolognese. "Spag bol?"
My mind winced "If we're eating now I'll have a little bit, but I just bought stuff from the corner shop with Rep so I'm not too hungry," I lied, trying to avoid the thought of eating.
"That's alright, don't worry about it. How is Rep?"
The conversation flowed on after that, somehow twisting into the topic of relationships.
My dad swallowed a mouthful before talking. "So we've got Rep and her girlfriend, but what about you, Eighty? Any cute boys?"
I shook my head with a sigh. "Nothing really standing out to me this year," I mused quietly. No sooner than I had said that did the image of Midnights slink into my mind. Sure, she was pretty, but I didn't like her that way. Although now that I thought about it, I realised that calling her pretty was an understatement. So realistically, Midnights was really fucking hot. My top teeth subconsciously tugged at my bottom lip. For me to call Midnights hot was completely platonic, obviously, it's just a girl complimenting a girl.
"That's a shame. I'm sure someone will come around."
I nodded. "I think I'm going to head up to my room now... homework."
His brow furrowed, "you sure? You didn't eat much."
"Yeah, sorry dad. I'll take it to school tomorrow for lunch?"
"Alright, as long as you aren't hungry later on," he smiled.
"I ate heaps after school, don't worry!" I pushed my chair in.
He nodded and I jogged upstairs, my mind still buzzing from Midnights' weird goodbye. The burn on her hand... surely not.
Sleep. I needed sleep.
