To my unsurprise, the girl from the store was in my class the next Monday morning. She had her things on the desk next to mine and was sitting and gazing at her phone.
Her previously curly hair had now been straightened to perfection and was sitting loosely around her upper arms, while her stunning blue eyes were the same melancholy shade.
The girl was wearing more makeup this time, all though she didn't need it at all. Her eyelids had a dusting of midnight blue and a small white shimmer dotted the inside.
She truly was, absolutely stunning.
I placed my laptop on my desk and sat on it, staring at the door and waiting patiently for Rep. When she didn't show up in the next minute, I huffed and pushed my chair back, causing it to scrape on the floor.
The girl's eyes flicked up to assess the noise's origin and her gaze met mine, causing her eyebrows to raise slightly.
"Hi again," I said, unsure of whether or not she recognised me.
"Hello." She replied, sounding bored.
"Is today your first day?"
She nodded, "yeah."
"Know anyone already?" I asked, looking around a little. She seemed to be by herself.
The girl shook her head, "no."
I smiled, "you do now, I'm 1989."
She smiled softly in return, "Midnights."
"Nice to meet you."
She nodded subtly, still looking a little unsure. "you too."
At least she was polite.
Out the corner of my eye, I spotted Rep making her way over. She was in conversation with a random dude, before she saw me and said goodbye to him.
Rep came over and dumped her stuff on her desk, the one on my left.
"Rep, I need to introduce you to someone." I said, waving her closer. "Midnights, this is Reputation. Reputation, Midnights." I gestured to each of them in turn.
Rep gave her a curt nod, only briefly acknowledging her. She eyed Midnights with a slight suspicion before moving to sit down.
I rolled my eyes at her attitude. "She'll warm up."
Midnights gave me an offended look, "why was she looking at me like that?"
"She's got issues," I replied simply with a shrug.
"I do not have issues," Rep argued.
"You have all the issues."
Rep huffed and stood up, "I'm going to find Lover."
"Be quick, I need you for science!" I called out as she exited.
Once she was gone, Midnights sighed. "She's quite the ray of sunshine, isn't she?"
I nodded. "Couldn't agree more. She's like a fish, she needs to acclimatise to you."
"Uh... sure."
We laughed a little before I changed the subject and began to tell her about me, my family, my cat, all the things. Midnights sat quietly, listening to my rambling and never looking away.
"Anyway, that's enough about me. Sorry about the gushing," I apologised awkwardly.
She shook her head, "don't apologise, I liked it."
I smiled faintly. "What about you?"
Midnights sighed and looked at her hands. "I... I dunno. My life's not as simple."
I furrowed my brows. "You can continue, if you like. But I won't pry."
"No, it's okay. There's just things... for example, my sister."
Midnights seemed to find something intriguing on her hands as she talked. "She's older than me, only by two years. Her name is Poets, and she's a little different."
I tilted my head, "...different how?"
"Different in the sense I haven't heard her voice in seven years," Midnights said softly, a wave of blankness washing over her face as she looked back up at me.
"Oh... I'm really sorry," I near-whispered, gently picking up her hand into mine. It was calloused and rough, her palm stained with what looked like an old burn scar.
She tensed under my light touch.
"Don't be sorry, there's nothing anyone can do about it. Believe me, I've tried." Midnights stated rather harshly, her eyes narrowed.
I shrunk back slightly under her gaze and nodded. "I understand."
The girl pulled her hand away from me and sat back in her chair. She looked distant, like she was in process of being put to sleep forever.
"If you ever need someone..." I offered softly. My years of companionship with Rep had taught me that girls who kept things inside always had a snapping point, they were just unique to where that snapping point was.
I knew plenty about Rep, of course, but this new girl had me curious.
Midnights looked at me, her expression a mixture of different shades. "Maybe," was all she said, one short murmur and she was back on her phone.
I sighed quietly to myself and tapped the table with my nails, boredom creeping into my mind.
----------------------------------------------
I rested my head on Folklore's shoulder, the sun warming my skin. I sighed, yawned and watched the others as they ate and chatted.
I'd dragged Midnights out with us, knowing she probably wouldn't be doing anything else, and she was now sitting to my left and quietly picking at a piece of bread.
"You haven't talked much, Midnights," Lover paused her stroking of Rep's hair to pick up her fork.
Midnights hummed in reply, "I haven't found anything to say."
Lover nodded and chewed her lunch slowly before Rep wriggled in Lover's lap and blindly grabbed her hand to pull it back to her head.
"Is that one bipolar or something?" The new girl asked, gesturing at Rep.
Lover chuckled, "no."
"If that was about me, I'm going to slaughter someone," Rep growled, her words slightly muffled from where her face was tucked into Lover's neck.
Her girlfriend kissed her head, "wasn't about you."
I chuckled quietly. "Midnights?" I sat up slightly to look at her.
Midnights looked at me, her eyes squinting from the sun.
"Would you want to walk home together after school?"
She hesitated, before nodding. "Yeah, that would be nice."
I smiled, progress.
AN: Someone help me I can't drag myself away from writing about Rep 😭 I also just realised that the bio for this story doesn't match it so I'm going to have to change that
