Synopsis: bit of a rewrite of my very very very old 'the Viking and the mermaid'

Well... this was a predicament.

There were people on your island. Ok, well, it wasn't really your island. It belonged to the local dragons really, but it was the island you'd made the shores and coastline of your home. And now, a group of dragon riders had started setting up a little settlement there. You weren't exactly supposed to let humans know you existed, last time that happened your kind got hunted. But you didn't exactly have anywhere else to go, so it seemed like for the time being, you'd be hiding from your new roommates.

Merfolk weren't the only aquatic being in the waters, aside from the regular old fish and sea life, there were plenty of aquatic dragons too. Fin folk, selkies too, they were around here and there. Most aquatic creatures went unnoticed by humans, as they lived deep under water where humans couldn't see or willingly hid from them like the Merfolk did. It was generally agreed upon by the water people, that humans were dangerous. They'd proven themselves to be, with their big ships and swords, nets and spears.

Although this rag tag group that's shown up on the island called it 'the edge' seemed well... a bit more on the rambunctious dumbass side. Not dangerous. They didn't seem bloodthirsty, just willing to defend themselves and their dragons. And said dragons didn't seem to be in any pain or suffering either, like they were completely ok with being a humans companion.

You had a feeling the night fury knew you were there though... sometimes when you were watching from a distance, he'd make eye contact with you for a moment. As cute as he was, you were weary of a dragon spotting you and trying to drag you by the tail back to its owner.

Your solution to all this, stay in your little cave and keep far enough from the shore you could watch the human, but they couldn't see you. This little cave you'd settled in was in the side of one of the cliffs that dropped into the sea. The opening was narrow, providing protection against the rough waters crashing into the side of the rock face and preventing anything bigger than you from getting inside. It lead into a small tunnel, then out into a bigger opening where the water filled up a bit of a pool and the rest was like a rocky shore. The moonlight from the crack that served as an opening, would shine in and illuminate it at night. And in the day, the sun would allow for some decent visibility.

You had a little collection in there, shells you liked, spears fashioned from bones and driftwood, fossils, teeth dragons and sharks had lost. As well as a few human items from sunken ships or people loosing them overboard. A shield, a cool helmet with one of the horns broken off, some coins, the hilt of a sword. You liked finding human artefacts, it felt like finding forbidden treasure.

This little cave had been a safe haven, and given its narrow and flooded opening, you were relatively confident no one would find it. You could paint the walls, decorate with your shells and sleep on in the shallows in peace.

That was until you woke up one morning, to something warm and scaly against your arm. It took a moment for you to process as your mind switched back on after a long slumber, but when you did and you were met face to face with the night fury, you jumped out of your scales.

How the hell did he get in?! Wouldn't he be too big for the entrance? Well... maybe if he tucked his legs and wings in real tight..?

"Holy sh- hello! Uh... how did you-" you stammered, jolting up and backing up slightly in shock.

The dragon seemed calm, not wanting to attack or anything. He just seemed... curious. He'd probably never see a merperson before, and wasn't sure if he should snack on the tail, or be nice to the human top half it was attached too. He leaned down, sniffing the scales on your tail and pawing at his nose in discomfort when he got some water in it. You couldn't help but giggle a little at that, he was almost cat like.
