Fandom: LOZ breath of the wild.
Ship: Link x reader
Oneshot/unfinished story: first chapters of a potential story, I'm unsure about how to continue but kind of want to.
Synopsis:

Link didn't remember much, he remembered his name and his fighting skills... that was about it. The voice of a woman telling him to fight on, to be careful, to fulfil his duty was about all he could focus on since he'd woken up in that pool. There was so much he had to do, and so little time. Maybe a little help wouldn't hurt.

Note: Since Link is a known trans masc/enby gender awakening character, I KNOW there's an audience out there for this. So behold! Trans Link x Trans(or enby) reader.

Chapter 1 | I'm just like you

HSL, or Hylian sign language, was taught in schools once upon a time. Before the great calamity, or so he'd been told. Nowadays, 100 years later, those who knew it were people who used it because of hearing or verbal impairments. Or, those who have family and friends who use it. It's not as common as it once was. Which is a shame really, it'd make the world much more accessible. But Link knew that the world was still recovering from the calamity, so he couldn't blame people for not having the time or resources to learn. But it made communication a little hard for him, when not everyone spoke his language.

He could write, or use a program on his shikah slate to talk with, but signing was just much easier. He never actually knew why he couldn't talk, it wasn't physically unable to. But something always stopped him, it was a mental block. Unless he deeply trusted, and was extremely close to someone, he couldn't bring himself to talk.

In his travels, when people asked him why he didn't talk, he'd always have to explain he wasn't sure why. Some reacted ignorantly, some offered theories. Medics he'd seen for injuries would offer their two rupees as well. Some said it could be a trauma response, others a neuro-developmental issue. But one thing was clear, Link was mostly mute. He didn't really mind, he spent a-lot of time travelling alone anyway. But the communication barrier, it got annoying at times.

Something else he knew for sure when he woke up, was that he was a man. At least, he felt like one. He awoke wearing almost nothing, lying in a pool of water. Left behind for him were some basic clothes, the shikah slate and a roll of tape. Not any old office tape. Fabric based tape with adhesive for the skin, he knew what it was for. To bind his chest. Whoever left him here, knew that he was a man who'd been unfortunately stuck into the wrong biological body. He silently thanked whoever left him there, for at least providing him with something to safely flatten his chest.

Although it was only one roll, he'd need to find some more eventually.

Once he'd gotten the chance to stop and look at himself, in the reflection of a pond once he'd managed to make his way out into the wild, he noticed some other details. He LOOKED like a man. Despite his unfortunate situation of having an AFAB body, his appearance was very much masculine. Thank Hylia for that. But he wondered if before he'd been put to sleep, before he lost his memory, he'd done something to his body to make it look that way. He simply couldn't remember.

Link knew he was a boy, but couldn't remember how far he'd gotten in the case of transitioning his body. Had he taken hormones? Or gotten facial masculinising work? He didn't remember at all.

Those thoughts lingered in the back of his mind, but he had bigger issues to focus on right now. There were divine beasts to get control of, a demonic entity to slay, a princess to save.

Zelda, he knew her. That's what everyone told him. That he was her knight, that she was the voice he could hear. Although he hadn't fully recalled her yet. A few memories had come to him, as he'd found the locations of the pictures in his slate across his travels. He knew that they cared for each other, but the memory was still distant. He felt the need to uphold his duty as her knight, but the lack of memory made him feel a little... distant. Like he was doing this for a friend of a friend, someone he knew but not personally.
