Chapter 11: Problems
Gaston picked up Jackie the following night and took her to his house, where he had prepared a wonderful dinner for them. Gaston's mom and siblings had gone out, so he had the house to himself. Gaston's family lived in a small house, and he shared a room with his two brothers, Daniel and Grady. He was especially close to his brother Grady. After they finished eating, Gaston took out the engagement ring and proposed to Jackie, expressing his love and hope that she would agree to be his wife.
Jackie was taken aback and momentarily speechless.
"I hope I didn't rush things. If you prefer to wait longer before getting married, I completely understand. If you choose to marry me, I will always support your decision to attend college," Gaston said.
"I love you, Gaston, and I will marry you. I apologize for taking so long to respond; I was just overwhelmed with happiness," Jackie responded.
Gaston then placed the engagement ring on Jackie's finger, and afterward, he helped her to bed where they shared an intimate moment.

The following day, Larry Hatching was perusing the newspaper when he discovered that his nephew Gaston was set to marry Jackie Foster. This news infuriated Larry, as he couldn't fathom his nephew tying the knot with someone he deemed unworthy. Larry was aware that Jackie's mother was homeless. He decided to confront Gaston, who was busy working in the yard when he noticed his uncle approaching the house.
"What do you want, Larry?!" Gaston shouted, clearly irritated.
"Is that how you address your uncle?!" Larry retorted, equally upset.
"What do you want?!" Gaston yelled, loud enough for the entire neighborhood to hear.
"Are you really marrying Jackie Foster?!" Larry asked, furious.
"Yes, I am. I love Jackie!" Gaston shot back, equally angry.
"I just don't get why you're marrying her. You could do so much better!" Larry retorted, still upset.
"Who I choose to marry is none of your concern!" Gaston snapped.
"Julie has a sister named Monica who likes you. She would make a great wife," Larry suggested.
"I have no interest in marrying that witch's sister!" Gaston yelled in frustration.
"I don't want you to embarrass this family by marrying her!" Larry responded angrily.
"My mother and siblings are fond of Jackie and are pleased for me. However, my siblings and I have never been included in your family. I have no desire to be part of your family, so leave my house! You are not welcome here, Larry!" Gaston shouted in anger.
Larry, feeling furious, left Gaston's house in a rage.
Later, Larry was at home sitting in the kitchen when Nicholas walked in and noticed his father's distress.
"What's wrong with you?" Nicholas asked rudely.
"Your cousin is marrying that beggar, Jackie Foster!" Larry responded angrily. "Why do you care who Gaston marries?" Nicholas retorted, equally upset.
"I don't want him to bring shame on us!" Larry shot back.
"Jackie isn't a beggar; she's a dedicated worker and I respect her a lot. Her mother, Peggy, is also a hard worker and a very kind person. They've never relied on handouts!" Nicholas argued.
"Why are you defending her? Are you having an affair with her?!" Larry shouted in anger.
"I'm not having an affair with Jackie. I would never betray Gaston like that! You're a terrible person with a twisted mind!" Nicholas shot back, equally furious.
"I don't want Gaston to marry her!" Larry retorted angrily.
"Dad, just leave Gaston and Jackie alone! You don't care about either of us or our happiness! All you want is to control our lives. You forced me to marry that awful woman I can't even stand to look at!" Nicholas yelled.
Julie, who overheard his comments about her, began to cry. Nicholas then stormed out.
"Shut up!" Larry yelled at Julie.
Enraged, Julie ran out of the house to go to her mother's place.
The following day, Larry visited Jackie, who was filled with fear at the sight of him approaching her home.
"I want you to keep your distance from my nephew! I know you're having an affair with my son!" Larry shouted in anger.
Jackie retorted, "You're a disturbed man who needs help. I'm not involved with your son. I would never betray Lisa or Gaston like that. It's your daughter-in-law you should be wary of, as she might do something harmful!"
Larry pressed, "How much will it take for you to stay away from my nephew?!" Jackie responded fiercely, "I don't want your money. Just leave now!"
Larry left, and Peggy overheard his words.
"I am scared, Jackie!" Peggy exclaimed, visibly upset.
"Mom, don't be scared. I love Gaston and I won't let that evil man intimidate me. I will talk to Gaston about his uncle," Jackie assured Peggy.
Jackie was furious that Larry had upset her mother. She didn't hold Gaston responsible for having an evil uncle. Once Jackie had calmed down, she went to see Gaston. Gaston could tell that Jackie was upset.
"What's wrong?" Gaston asked, sounding worried.
"Your uncle came to my house and threatened me. He offered me money to stay away from you, and he accused me of having an affair with your cousin Nicholas. My mom is very upset. This kind of stress is not good for her," Jackie replied angrily.
"I'm so sorry, Jackie. I don't know what's wrong with my uncle. I'll talk to him," Gaston replied.
"Your uncle already hates me and wants to destroy me. Please don't make things worse. I think we should move somewhere far away from your uncle after we get married," Jackie suggested.
"We can move to New York with my brother," Gaston proposed.
