contains sensitive content.“Mom, tomorrow is your birthday. Are we celebrating it?” I asked, working on the addition problem as a part of my math homework.
“Of course but you should get to your bed now,” she said, gently taking away the notebook and planting a kiss on top of my head. “Mom, tomorrow is the first day of Navratri. We have a week off” I gave an excuse denying to sleep early.“Okay,” she relented, glancing over the analog watch around her wrist. “It’s 9.30 pm. 10.30 tak so jana” She chuckled, running her fingers through my hair.
“You’re the best Mom” I stood up from the sofa and enveloped my small arms around her.
“And you’re the best son” Her lips pressed against my cheeks and her hands patted my back.
“Chetna” Mom flinched. Her smile started losing the sparkle. My father’s ominous footsteps echoed as he stormed in but I didn’t turn to face him. I didn’t want to face the beast.
“How many times should I remind you?”He roared, shoving me aside and grabbing Mom’s hair in his fist. “Naren, what are you talking …. Ahhh?” She hissed out of pain.
“Dad, please” I started requesting, putting my entire strength to free my Mom.
“Naren, it’s hurting” The tears streamed down from her eyes while I tried my best to save her. “Dad, leave Mom” I sobbed, reaching for his wrist.
“Naren Bhai, what’s happening?” Badi Maa asked, descending the stairs followed by the rest of the family members. Bade papa, Dadi and even her.
“Stay away from my matter!” He shouted, dragging Mom across the floor. “Bade Papa, please say something” I ran with the hope that he could save my mother from her husband.
“Dadi… Dadi kuch kahona” I begged, bowing in her feet, pleading to save my mother.
“Naren, Avyukta ko maine kuch nahi kiya, woh………. khel raha tha aur fisal gaya. Trust me Naren…… Please leave me tonight.” The words faded but the man didn’t show any mercy on Mom but kept dragging cruelly inside her room.
(Naren, I didn't do anything to Avyukta; he was playing and slipped.)
Leaving everyone, I ran to save my Mom but my dad’s second wife threw a ball on my way making me stumble upon my steps, causing me to fall on the floor, hitting my head. Her shadow loomed over me and her heel pierced my leg but none of my family members came to my rescue as they walked back to their rooms.
