I had read about mind-blowing twists in books. Twisted enough to make you question your intelligence. Twisted enough to send enormous goosebumps in your body. Twisted enough to tighten the knot in your guts. Twisted enough to make you question your very existence.

But nothing could have prepared me for those four words by monotonous being as soon as he exited his closet.

“Breakfast at the dining table.”

The words reverberated like a strange echo, blocking all my senses. When I asked him the reason for this sudden change that he wanted me to adopt along with him – his silence was the response.

“Ma’am, here is your tea.” Smita placed the cup on the table beside my plate. I  offered a gentle smile to thank her.

It had been twenty days since I had arrived here and each day I was welcomed by his new experimental acts.

I had a day off due to Saturday and I had plans to visit Maa’s new house. They had shifted fifteen days back and it's a ten-minute walk-in distance.

Kiara settled on the seat across from us. I silently munched on a sandwich.  I rolled my eyes watching him stuffing his green salad.

No wonder he would scream if he ever had Panipuri.

Boring tasteless life he was living with – I concluded after observing him all these days.

“What are you doing here?” A sharp tone interrupted.

I averted my eyes on the woman standing in a pink saree, demanding an answer. He stayed silent without acknowledging his stepmom’s presence.

“Maahir,” she called him forcefully. My gaze bounced between these two stubborn human beings, locked in their hidden cold war.

“Are you hearing me?” She crossed her arms and glanced at her daughter. “Kiara, get up. You aren’t allowed to share the table with them. I’ll ask your Dad to get us another dining table.”

None of her words made the man sitting beside me stop his breakfast and answer her questions.

“Pankti, ask your so-called husband to leave,” her wrathful words were spitted on me.
