“Pankti.” A hand fondled on my face.
“Wake up. Look at your condition.” My eyes closed. A familiar pair of hands held my shoulders. I sensed myself rising from the floor. I rebelled to open my eyes but I failed.
I was exhausted. Physically, mentally, and emotionally.
“Babygirl. Wake up. I got your morning tea.”
“I don’t want to wake up. I don’t want to face reality.” I muttered. My hands gently rubbed against my closed eyes.
My eyes opened unhurriedly and came across a blurry sight of my best friend sitting in front of my eyes. I hugged her and the tears attempted to wash away the pain confined in my heart since last night.
“No Babygirl. Don’t cry.” She patted my back tenderly but my tears soaked the fabric worn by her.
“Why me? Avyukta chala gaya. He promised he won’t.”
“We can defeat anyone in this world but we can never oversmart the creator of this world.”
I removed myself. Tears printed their marks on my cheeks. The pain throbbed in my brain. The void deepened in my heart.
“Everything happens for a reason." Her hands cupped my face. “Pankti, none of my words or efforts could ever imagine what you must be facing. Do you think you’re the only one suffering?” Her thumb wiped off my tears. “You met him nearly two months back. Think about his parents. They weren’t ready to see their son leaving this world. And what could be worse? Their son died when everyone was celebrating the joy of his wedding.”
My gaze lowered to the floor as her hands accepted me in her embrace. “You must be with them. To comfort them. I know it isn’t easy but tell me did you ever love Avyukta? You said you only liked him. That’s it. Before he could make an irresistible place in your heart. God chose to change the plans.”
“He made it. I dreamt of my future with him. We planned our life together.” I broke the hug. “I never confessed but I started admiring him.” I got up from the floor and walked towards the library door. I twisted the door knob and showed her the library renovated by him.
“Is this a joke? There.” My hands curled around her wrist and walked inside. “There. Near that brown shelf. I kissed him, Vidisha. If I hadn’t had anything for him, why would I have said yes when he asked me for my consent?”
“Pankti.”
“Leave me alone. I don’t want to hear anyone. I know I was nothing but an experimental doll last night. Nobody took that one initiative to inform me how my feelings were nothing but a pawn for them.”
I walked out and entered the closet area. The messy bun, the half-worn bangles in my hands, the imperfectly perfect draped dupatta, and that red mark between my hairline displayed my devastating self.
