Chapter 30 - Sick

Zee came back from work early to talk to Nunew. If Nunew needs to shout at him it's better that it happens when the children are not home. Before this morning's fallout he would have just walked in the door. But now he is hesitant as it seems that anything can set Nhu off. He knocked on the door wand waited for Nhu to answer. He stood a good distance from the door so of Nhu looked through the peephole he could see it's him. Also just in case Nhu wants to hit him with one of his crutches he would be able to get away. He patiently waited for Nhu to come to the door. After a while of not getting an answer he thought Nhu might be sleeping and waking him with a phone call might getting him into more trouble. He started to turn away thinking he could maybe ask for a moment to talk when he brings the children home later. He doesn't even know if he will be allowed to spend the night again. He got so used to seeing his children before they go to bed and waking them in the morning. Now he probably have to move back to his flat and see his kids when their mother allows him. He hope that he will still be able to take and fetch them from kindergarten. Those fifteen minutes drive is their special time together.

Then the door opened. There stood pink cheeked Nunew. His hair messed up from sleep. He looked angry again. Not again Zee thought. He was hoping that Nunew's mood would be a bit better. I was sleeping Nunew grumbled. Sorry Zee said. They stared at each other. Nunew at Zee's face and Zee at Nunew's feet. His toes are still cute Zee thought.  May I come in Zee asked. Nunew was surprised at the question. Nunew was more surprised that Zee knocked and waited. He knew Zee had a key to the apartment and assumed that he would just come in like he did while Nunew was in hospital. Why didn't you just come in Zee Nunew asked. He is calling me Zee again Zee thought in his mind. It's better than not being called anything. You are back home and I don't want to be intrusive. So I will knock when I came to visit the kids or come to fetch them. Can I come in Nhu Zee asked again. I need to talk to you about something.

Nunew stepped away and let Zee enter. Can I get you something to drink Nunew asked him. I'm fine thank you. I won't be long. I have a meeting before picking up the kids and I don't want to be late for them. As they sat down Zee explained again to Nunew how his company is being held responsible for the incident where he and numerous other people got hurt and that the company will be compensating every one for their injuries and trauma. All the while saying this Zee don't once looked Nunew  in his eyes. He then was quiet for a few minutes and just before Nunew opened to ask if that was it Zee lifted his eyes and looked Nunew directly in his eyes. Nunew could see guilt, shame, anger, anxiety amd most of all selfloath in Zee's  eyes. Zee was loathing himself for not protecting the person that loves him the most. He took a deep breath and then he spoke. Max and I was commissioned to draft the plans for the mall. Another person was to assemble a team and find credible contractors to build the mall. This person went against company rules and did not employ the contractor that was decided on. He choose someone different. He made a deal with the person to get a share for giving the contact to him. He knew the person used materials that were not up to standard and that corners were cut. The ceiling caved and they were found out. They were charged with attempted manslaughter. Nunew was confused and asked Zee why he is telling him all this.  Zee took a breath again and Nunew before I tell you I want you to know that I will never allow anyone to hurt you again. No one will be able to lay a hand on you body again. I swear my own life as well as those of my parents. Now Nunew was starting to get worried. What's going on Zee? He asked. I have never seen you this serious. What happening. You are scaring me Nunew said as his voice started to quiver and his eyes shot full of tears. He was genuinely scared now and he doesn't know why but he fears what Zee is about to tell him.

The person responsible for awarding the building contract and who worked together with the builder to scam the company oit of money and put your life and countless other people's lives in danger is Tee Nunew. Your brother is the one of the people that caused you to get hurt. He is being prosecuted and that is why your parents are in the city. I fou d out from you last night that they are here and did some enquiries at work this morning.

Nunew was quiet. He didn't know what to think or say. He could feel a migraine coming on. He looked at Zee to see if he is pulling his leg but he saw the truth in his eyes. It's my fault Nhu. I knew all along where you and the kids were and when I was sent here to draft the plans I jumped at the opportunity. It meant that I could see you and the children even if only from afar. Your brother was added to my team and I could not give my boss the real reason why I didn't want him here. I didn't know he will do such a thing. You probably will hate me more now. I brought the cause of your past pain and your present hurt to this city. I will understand if you don't want to see you in front of you again but please may I visit my children. I beg you please don't take them away from me. Zee's eyes was cast down but Nunew could see the tears escaping. Nunew's head was pounding now. His eyes got blurry and he struggled to stay up right. Zee he whispered. When Zee looked up.and saw Nunew is as white as a sheet he immediately picked him up and took him to the room. What can I do Nhu? What can I do to help you Zee said. He was full on panicking now. Make it dark Nunew whispered. It took a moment for Zee to realise that he needs to make the room dark. He quickly closed the curtains but it was not dark enough. He then took some blankets and threw it over the curtain rails. Finally the room was shrouded in darkness. He rushed to the bed when he heard Nunew heaving. He sped to the kitchen to get a bucket from one of the cabinets. Luckily he knows where everything is. He made to the room just in time as Nunew started to throw up. He rubbed his back softly speaking soothing words to him. With his one hand rubbing Nunew's back and he took his phone out of his pocket and texted Max that he is not coming back to the office and asked him to attend the afternoon meeting alone. Then he texted Nanon and P'Jaa to ask them to pick up the twins as he is with Nunew how is sick having a migraine. After getting confirmations from everyone he continued to concentrate on Nunew. He then got a text from Nanon telling him which medicine to give to Nunw and to.put a cold cloth on his head and to keep him still and quiet. Any sudden loud noises can make the migraine worse. He also said they will bring the children home tonight after Nunew has gotten enough rest. Zee replied and said thank you.

Zee sat at Nunew side for the rest of the afternoon making sure to change the cloth from time to time and making sure Nunew is comfortable. Zee could only see the time on his phone and realised it's evening already. He quietly stood up to go and start supper. Something light to eat as Nunew might be hungry when he wakes up. He known the children will eat next door at Nanon's house. Just as he was about to leave he heard a soft  are you going to leave me again? He turned around to see Nunew looking at him. I'm just going to make you something to eat Zee told him. Why can't you just order in? You are not a servant Zee you don't have to prepare all our meals. Zee cast his eyes down again. Okay I will order for you. What do you want to eat he asked in a controlled voice back in his role as being beneath Nunew again. Fuck Nunew said to himself I did it again. Why don't I feel any satisfaction for hurting him like this? Making him doubt his worth as I was doubting mine all these years?  I shouldn't do this but I can't help it. All this went ybrough Nunew's mind as he was looking at Zee. He could see all the self-doubt written on his face. He felt like hugging him but didn't want Zee to et the wrong impression. Just order what you want and order enough for both of us. I want you to eat with me. We need to talk about what's going to happen with my so called family being in the city. Zee just nodded and started to leave the room. Where are you going? Nunew asked him. I was going inside to.place the food order. You can do it here and please take the blankets  off the curtain rails if you don't mind. My migraine is gone now. He slightly smiled at Zee to soften his words. Zee gawked at him seeing his smile but then remembered himself and took the blankets off and sat next Nunew while he opens the menu of the closest fast food shop on his phone so Nunew can choose what he must order.
