Brielle was the first one awake. She made soft baby noises, tiny coos that filled the room. Remy, always the light sleeper, opened her eyes and smiled when she saw her daughter wriggling around in the bassinet beside their bed. Drea was still sound asleep, her arm lazily draped over Remy's waist.
Remy yawned and stretched before gently moving Drea's arm. She quietly got up, not wanting to disturb her wife. Brielle's tiny arms and legs wiggled as Remy bent down to pick her up. "Hey, baby girl," she whispered, brushing a soft kiss against Brielle's forehead. "Let's go let Mommy sleep a little longer, okay?"
Brielle blinked up at her with those wide, curious eyes, already awake and ready to start her day. Remy carried her out of the room, tiptoeing down the hall into the living room. The house was quiet, still in that peaceful morning hush. The only sound was the soft clicking of the clock on the wall and the occasional bird chirping outside.
Remy settled onto the couch, cradling Brielle in her arms. "So, what's the plan today, huh?" she asked, her voice light as she rocked Brielle gently. "You and me, little one, while Mommy gets some sleep."
Brielle's tiny fingers curled around one of Remy's, holding on tight. Remy chuckled softly. It was these little moments, early in the morning when the world felt like it was just the two of them, that made her heart swell with love. She hadn't expected motherhood to feel this way—so deep, so overwhelming, yet so wonderful at the same time.
After a while, Remy heard the soft creak of footsteps coming down the hall. She glanced up and saw Drea leaning against the doorway, rubbing her eyes and smiling. "You left me," Drea said, her voice still husky from sleep.
Remy grinned. "Didn't want to wake you. Figured you could use the extra rest."
Drea walked over, her smile growing as she sat down next to Remy on the couch. "You're sweet. But I missed you two."
"Missed us? We've been gone for, like, ten minutes," Remy teased, leaning over to kiss Drea softly.
Drea laughed, resting her head on Remy's shoulder. "Ten minutes is a long time in our world these days."
The three of them sat like that for a while, enjoying the peaceful morning. Remy held Brielle, who was now drifting back to sleep in her arms, and Drea leaned into her, closing her eyes again. It was their little bubble of happiness, and neither of them wanted to move from it just yet.
After a while, Drea sat up, stretching her arms. "Okay, I guess we should start the day," she said with a yawn. "What's on the agenda? More baby bonding? Maybe a movie later?"
Remy raised an eyebrow, grinning. "Oh, I have plans."
Drea looked at her curiously. "Plans?"
"Yup," Remy said, still grinning. "You'll see. But first, I'm making breakfast."
Drea's face lit up. "You're making breakfast? I must've done something right."
Remy winked. "You always do, babe."
With that, Remy handed Brielle over to Drea and headed to the kitchen. Drea sat on the couch, cradling their daughter, smiling to herself. It was moments like these that made her feel like they had found their rhythm as a family. There had been hard days, sure—sleepless nights and stressful moments—but mornings like this reminded her that they were doing okay. More than okay, really. They were happy.
In the kitchen, Remy moved around with purpose. She knew Drea loved pancakes, so that was the plan. She grabbed the ingredients, humming softly to herself as she started mixing the batter. A few minutes later, the smell of pancakes filled the house, making Drea smile as she bounced Brielle on her knee.
