"Tyler, stop!" I repeated, my voice rising with panic. I rushed toward them, trying to push Tyler back. He was like a coiled spring, ready to explode, but he loosened his grip on Jason's collar enough for him to gasp for air. Jason stumbled, his face a mix of confusion and anger.
"What the hell is wrong with you?" Jason coughed, rubbing his neck where Tyler had grabbed him.
Tyler didn't answer immediately. His eyes were wild, darting between Jason and me as if trying to figure out what to say. Finally, he spoke, his voice cold and clipped. "You stay away from her. I mean it."
"Are you serious right now?" I yelled, stepping in between the two of them. "What is wrong with you, Tyler? You can't just-" My words faltered as I looked into his eyes, still blazing with intensity, but something else lurked there, something more complicated.
Tyler blinked, as though realizing what he had just done. He stepped back, running a hand through his hair, and for the first time, he looked genuinely remorseful, "You have no idea what you're getting yourself into Evelyn."
Before I could ask what he meant, Tyler turned on his heel and stormed out of the café, leaving Jason and me standing there in stunned silence.
Jason rubbed his neck again, his brow furrowed. "Evelyn, are you okay?" His voice was soft, but I could hear the underlying concern.
I wasn't sure how to answer. The café seemed to spin around me, the events of the past few minutes crashing into me all at once. What just happened? And why did I feel so torn? I glanced toward the door, half-expecting Tyler to walk back in, but he didn't.
"I'm fine," I finally managed to say, though I wasn't sure I believed it.
Jason nodded, though his eyes still held worry. "It's all my fault, I didn't know you guys were together or anything." He looked guilty.
"What no! absolutely not. I'd be crazy to be with someone like him." I lied.
"So you guys ain't together?" A small smirk escaped his lips.
I shook my head not knowing what else to say.
"I'll text you an address, meet me there tomorrow I have something to show you." He leaned in closer to my ear.
"Don't worry, Tyler won't find us." He smirked.
As we left the café, my mind kept spinning with questions. What was Tyler's problem? And why did I still care so much after everything? I could feel my heart beating out of my chest. The anxiety was overpowering me. All this was just too overwhelming.
What have I done?
Jason walked me home, and though we talked about other things, the tension from earlier hung in the air. When we finally said goodbye, I couldn't shake the feeling that things were only going to get more complicated from here.
The next morning I woke up to the sound of my phone buzzing on the nightstand. I squinted at the screen—8:00 AM. Jason’s message had already popped up, a short string of words and an address. My heart thudded as I read it over again and again, almost second-guessing my decision. It was impulsive, I knew that much, but I couldn’t deny the curiosity pulling me toward him.
I found myself lingering in front of the mirror, fixing my hair a little more carefully than usual and choosing an outfit that was casual but put-together.
As I arrived at the address he’d given me— a large, scenic park I’d never been to before. It was one of those places tucked away in the city—quiet, full of lush greenery, with trails that wove between tall, leafy trees. As I stepped onto the path, I spotted Jason standing under a massive oak tree, his back to me as he scanned the park with a thoughtful expression. He turned around and his face lit up on the sight of me.
