The days following her conversation with Ethan had been a blur for Ava. School had become a routine of navigating through conversations and assignments while her mind was preoccupied with her dilemma. The tension between her and Lucas lingered, and she could sense that Ethan was growing more anxious with each passing day.

Tuesday afternoon brought a small break in the chaos. Ava had decided to use this time to clear her head. After finishing her classes, she headed to her favorite quiet spot in the school library. The familiar scent of old books and the soft hum of the air conditioning were a comforting backdrop to her turbulent thoughts.

She had just settled into a corner with a book, hoping to escape her worries, when Lucas appeared, leaning casually against the bookcase. His presence was like a sudden storm in her calm.

"Ava, we need to talk," he said, his tone serious but soft.

Ava's heart sank. She closed her book and looked up at him, trying to keep her composure. "What about?"

Lucas glanced around, ensuring they were out of earshot from other students. "I've been thinking a lot about our last conversation. I don't want to keep pushing you, but I can't just wait indefinitely."

Ava felt a pang of guilt. "I know. I've been trying to figure things out, but it's so hard. I feel like I'm being pulled in different directions."

Lucas nodded, his eyes filled with a mix of frustration and hurt. "I understand that you're conflicted. I really do. But I need to know if there's still a chance for us, or if you're just trying to buy time."

Ava looked away, her hands fidgeting in her lap. "It's not about buying time. I genuinely care about you, Lucas. But Ethan... he's a big part of my life too. I don't want to hurt either of you."

Lucas sighed deeply. "Ava, I don't want to pressure you, but I also don't want to be stuck in limbo. I need to know if there's something real between us or if I'm just holding on to a hope."

She met his gaze, her own eyes filled with a mixture of sadness and determination. "I wish I had a clear answer for you. But I don't. I need more time to figure out my feelings."

Lucas's face hardened slightly, but he kept his voice steady. "Okay. I get it. But I need you to be honest with me. If you decide that we're not going to work, I need to know. I can't keep waiting in uncertainty."

Ava nodded, feeling the weight of his words. "I understand. I'll let you know as soon as I can."

Lucas gave her a tight smile before turning to leave. As he walked away, Ava felt a profound sense of loss. The thought of losing Lucas, as well as the possibility of hurting Ethan, weighed heavily on her. She had hoped to avoid making a decision, but it seemed increasingly inevitable.

The library, once a sanctuary, now felt suffocating. Ava closed her book, stood up, and walked out into the hallway. She needed to clear her head, but the path ahead was clouded with uncertainty.

As she made her way to the exit, she spotted Ethan waiting by the front doors of the school, looking more anxious than usual. Ava's heart ached at the sight of him. She knew she had to face the reality of her choices soon, but the pressure of making the right decision was almost unbearable.

With a deep breath, Ava approached Ethan, preparing herself for another difficult conversation. The stakes were high, and the path she chose would undoubtedly have lasting effects on all their lives.
