Ava spent the night tossing and turning, her thoughts a tangled web of confusion. Lucas's confession played over and over in her mind, each word he said striking a different chord in her heart. The way he had looked at her, the honesty in his eyes—it was all too real. But what scared her most was how much it made her feel.
Morning came far too quickly, and Ava barely managed to pull herself together for school. As she walked down the hallways, her eyes scanned the crowd, searching for both Lucas and Ethan. The tension was too much to bear, but avoiding them wasn't an option. She needed to confront her emotions head-on, no matter how messy or complicated things got.
In her first class, she sat next to Emily, who was busy scribbling notes. Emily noticed Ava's distracted demeanor almost immediately. "You okay? You look like you've been hit by a bus."
Ava tried to muster a laugh, but it came out weak and unconvincing. "I'm fine. Just a lot on my mind."
Emily put down her pen and studied her friend carefully. "Does this have anything to do with Ethan or Lucas?"
Ava's heart skipped a beat at the mention of their names. She hadn't told Emily about Lucas's confession yet, but she could already feel the weight of it pressing down on her. "Maybe. Things are complicated, Em. Really complicated."
Emily leaned closer, lowering her voice. "I figured something was going on. I mean, you've been acting all weird around them lately. And it's no secret that Ethan is still hung up on you."
Ava sighed, her fingers twisting a strand of her hair nervously. "It's not just Ethan. Lucas... he told me how he feels about me."
Emily's eyes widened in surprise. "Wait, Lucas? Like, feelings-feelings?"
Ava nodded, her heart heavy with the realization. "Yeah. And I have no idea what to do about it. I care about him, but I'm still sorting things out with Ethan. I just... I feel like I'm in the middle of this huge mess."
Emily sat back, looking thoughtful. "Well, if you ask me, you've always had a connection with Lucas. But that doesn't mean you have to rush into anything. Take your time, Ava. You don't owe anyone an answer right now."
Ava appreciated Emily's advice, but it didn't make the situation any easier. As much as she wanted to take her time, the pressure to figure things out was growing. The longer she left things unresolved, the more complicated it would become.
By lunchtime, Ava was feeling the weight of it all. As she made her way to the cafeteria, she spotted Lucas sitting with his friends at their usual table. Their eyes met for a brief moment, and he gave her a small, tentative smile. Ava quickly looked away, feeling a pang of guilt for not having sorted out her feelings yet.
She grabbed a tray of food and scanned the room for a quiet spot to sit when she noticed Ethan walking toward her. Her stomach tightened at the sight of him, knowing that everything was still up in the air between them too.
"Hey, Ava," Ethan said as he approached her. He looked more relaxed than usual, but there was still a hint of tension in his voice. "Can we talk? I feel like we haven't really had a chance since... well, everything."
Ava nodded, her throat suddenly dry. "Yeah, sure. Let's go outside."
They made their way out of the cafeteria and into the school courtyard, where the cool air helped calm Ava's nerves. Ethan seemed a little more at ease than the last time they had spoken, but there was an undercurrent of something unsaid between them.
"I've been thinking a lot," Ethan began, running a hand through his hair. "About us, and everything that's happened. I know I haven't made things easy for you. And I want to apologize for that."
Ava's heart ached at his words. She had never doubted Ethan's sincerity, but hearing him acknowledge his part in their complicated situation made her feel both relieved and sad.
"It's not just you, Ethan," she said softly. "I've been struggling to figure out what I want, and I know that's been confusing for you too."
Ethan nodded, his expression serious. "I get that. But I also know that I still care about you, Ava. A lot. And I guess... I just needed to know if there's still a chance for us."
Ava felt the weight of his question hanging in the air between them. She knew how much Ethan cared about her, and a part of her still cared deeply for him too. But after everything that had happened, she wasn't sure if they could ever go back to the way things were.
"I don't know, Ethan," Ava admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. "I care about you, but I'm still trying to figure out my own feelings. There's so much going on, and I don't want to hurt anyone."
Ethan looked at her for a long moment, then sighed. "I get it. I really do. Just... promise me you'll be honest with yourself, okay? Don't let anyone pressure you into making a decision you're not ready for."
Ava nodded, feeling a lump form in her throat. "I promise."
As Ethan walked away, Ava was left standing alone in the courtyard, her heart torn between two people who meant the world to her. And no matter how hard she tried, she couldn't shake the feeling that whatever choice she made, someone would end up getting hurt.
