The next day at school, Ava felt like she was walking on eggshells. The tension from yesterday still clung to her, and even the smallest interactions with Lucas and Ethan were charged with unspoken emotions. She wasn't ready to face either of them, yet avoiding them seemed impossible.
In her first class, she sat in the back corner, hoping to blend into the background. She noticed Lucas had entered the room and instinctively averted her eyes. He caught her glance, but mercifully, he didn't approach her.
*Maybe he's giving me space,* she thought. But even though she appreciated it, the distance between them made her heart ache.
At lunch, Ava sat with a few classmates she barely knew, just to avoid sitting alone or worse—having to face Ethan or Lucas. The cafeteria was loud with chatter, but her mind was elsewhere, replaying the conversation from the park over and over again.
Lucas' words about not giving up on them kept echoing in her head. *But what did that even mean?* She was still trying to understand her own feelings—how could she possibly figure out what was best for them?
Suddenly, her phone buzzed. It was Ethan.
**Ethan:** *Can we meet after school? I really need to talk to you.*
Ava sighed, her stomach tightening. She couldn't keep avoiding these conversations forever. She typed a quick reply.
**Ava:** *Okay. Meet me at the park near my house.*
After lunch, the rest of the day passed in a blur. She didn't really pay attention to her classes, her thoughts drifting back and forth between Ethan and Lucas, and the tangled mess her life had become. By the time the final bell rang, her head was pounding from all the stress.
As she walked to the park, Ava rehearsed what she might say to Ethan. She didn't want to hurt him, but there was no easy way to explain the feelings she had been wrestling with. She still cared about him deeply, but after what Lucas had said... her heart was torn in two directions.
When she reached the park, Ethan was already there, leaning against a tree, his expression serious. He looked up as she approached, and Ava felt her heart sink. There was a tension in his eyes, one that made her realize that this conversation was long overdue.
"Hey," she greeted him softly, her voice barely audible.
"Hey," Ethan replied, his voice equally subdued. "Thanks for meeting me."
They stood in awkward silence for a moment before Ethan gestured to a nearby bench. "Let's sit."
Ava followed him, her nerves on edge. She could feel the weight of the conversation bearing down on her, and it took everything she had to not break down.
Ethan was the first to speak. "Ava, I know something's been bothering you. And I need to know... where do we stand? I can't keep pretending like everything's fine when it's clearly not."
His voice was steady, but there was a tremor of vulnerability beneath it. Ava clenched her hands in her lap, struggling to find the right words.
"I don't know, Ethan," she admitted, her voice barely above a whisper. "Everything's been so confusing lately. With you... with Lucas... with myself. I'm not even sure what I want anymore."
Ethan's eyes flickered with pain, but he didn't interrupt. He waited for her to continue.
"I still care about you," Ava said, her words tumbling out. "But I've been so overwhelmed. I've been trying to figure out who I am, and all these feelings keep pulling me in different directions. I don't want to hurt you... but I don't know how to move forward without being honest about how I feel."
Ethan took a deep breath, his jaw tightening. "And how do you feel, Ava? About us? About him?"
Ava looked down at her hands, the silence between them growing heavier with each passing second. She wanted to be honest, but the truth was painful.
"I don't know," she said finally. "I'm still trying to figure that out."
Ethan closed his eyes for a moment, exhaling slowly. When he opened them again, his expression was resolute. "I can't wait forever, Ava. I need to know where I stand. I need to know if this—if we—are worth fighting for."
Ava's chest tightened at his words. She knew what he was asking, and she hated that she couldn't give him a clear answer. But her heart was still so conflicted, torn between the boy she had built a connection with and the boy who had come crashing back into her life with a whirlwind of emotions.
"I'm sorry, Ethan," she whispered, her voice breaking. "I just... I don't know."
For a long moment, Ethan didn't say anything. The silence between them was filled with unspoken pain, and Ava could feel the weight of what she had just said settling over them like a dark cloud.
Finally, Ethan stood up, his expression pained but resigned. "I guess that's all I needed to hear."
Ava stood up too, reaching out as if to stop him. "Ethan, wait—"
But he shook his head, a sad smile on his lips. "No, Ava. It's okay. I just... I need some time."
And with that, he turned and walked away, leaving Ava standing alone in the park, her heart heavy with the weight of the choices she couldn't make.
