"Not really," I tell him point blank, and do not elaborate. I can't believe I'm letting him see me like this to begin with. I should've kicked him out of the bathroom or left the party a while ago.

Dex doesn't accept that answer, and I honestly didn't even expect him to. I just have absolutely no idea how to explain myself in this situation, so I'd like to dodge all of his questions until I can think of a solid lie. Dex just purses his lips, scanning my face up and down.

"You called my mom Detective Green." Decari tells me, and it may seem like just a regular statement, but he gets a lot across by just uttering those words alone. It shows that he has some sense of which parts of that conversation were important. I shows that he has an idea already about how I may have known his mother. So, I might as well come clean...

To an extent.

"I was involved in something when I was a kid," I explain to him, with no intention of going into further detail about what exactly I was involved in. I was already a suspect in The Doctor case. If Decari finds out I've committed murder—even if I was a child, and even if it was in self defense—that would not exactly work in my favor.

"Your mom was the detective on my case."

"You seem like more than a case to her."

Okay, that's fair. Even I know that most cops don't get as close with the people in their cases as she did to me. However, she was the only person I could talk to, and I had no parents. She was a mother back then, too, so it might've been something instinctual. Either way, she took care of me, and I've always been grateful for how much she helped me all those years.

"I couldn't speak English back then," I explain to him, since that is essentially the root of why we got so close. She was all I had—quite literally the only person I could communicate with, until I eventually learned English, which took a while. "She was the only person I could talk to."

Dex nods, seeming to understand this a bit better. I'm hoping that's the end of it, that this makes enough sense for him to let it go, but he still has this... tilt to his expression. Like something isn't quite adding up. His curiosity and questioning is really beginning to irritate me, and I wonder if I'm even cut out to be dating a detective, since this is probably—

We're not dating. We're not in a relationship, and we never will be, because it would be doomed to fail. What am I even talking about?

"Wouldn't your dad have spoken English, though?" Decari asks me, frowning. I know he has no idea what he's talking about, but bringing up my father is the equivalent of poking a bear. "I'm pretty sure Carter is an English name."

Camilo, be cool. It's fine. He doesn't know, and that's a good thing, because you don't want him to know. If he were to find out about Henry Carter, he'd find out about Martina Solares, and it would throw him down a rabbit hole that would eventually lead to me. I may not be listed by name in their case file, but it wouldn't be hard to figure out.
