The next few weeks are spent settling in and getting used to our new routines. Willow is now a part of the real world, and since everyone knows she's alive, her records and everything matter. So, she's been spending most of her time studying to get her GED. I have no doubt in my mind she'll ace it, as she's spent most of her life giving herself an education. I helped when I could, but she taught herself almost everything.
I go to the police station a couple more times, but I don't seem to be of much help. Probably because the person they're looking for, they mistook as The Doctor. I'm not worried about their investigation anymore, since nothing will lead back to me. Also, now The Doctor's case is closed. I no longer have to fear the police, no longer have to worry about getting caught.
I can stay with Willow and Dex. Always.
I should be happy about this. I'm free, I was given a once-in-a-lifetime way to escape my consequences. I should be ecstatic, but unfortunately, only three weeks after getting discharged from the hospital...
I'm growing restless.
"English is stupid," I hear from the kitchen table, where Willow is currently seated, doing what looks like some sort of grammar worksheet. The curriculum she's been following from some free website as she prepares for the test that will get her her diploma has been pretty heavy on the English lessons, in her defense.
English was never my strong suit, either, so I completely understand where she's coming from. It's quite literally both of our second languages. Willow has always been better at math and computer-oriented subjects. I've always excelled in science. None of that overlaps with English.
Maybe Decari could help? He probably went to a private school or something since his family is so well-off. Either way, he definitely got a better education than I did. Also, he only speaks English, so there's no risk of him mixing up word order or just plain forgetting the names of things like I do
So, I shoot him a text.
Can you come help with Willow's homework?
It only takes a couple of minutes for Dex to respond; sure. Be there soon
He punctuates the end of his message with a thumbs-up emoticon, and I pocket my phone a moment later. I inform Willow of the news, and her troubled expression morphs into one of relief. I watch her set all her studying materials aside and move her open laptop closer. I'm curious as to what she's doing, as she turns her focus to the device.
I step forward and glance at the screen, finding her browser opened to the home website of a nearby university. I quirk an eyebrow, unable to help my surprise. "You're already looking at colleges?"
The only response I get is a nod, and I frown. How am I supposed to break the news to her? I'm still working at the morgue, but it's not like I've received any sort of promotion. I'm still making the same amount of money I have for the last year, which is when my last promotion was.
