Alright, let's do this one last time, my name is Carter Oshua. I'm 17 years old, and for the past 4½ years, I've been the one and only... Kid Lightning. After the massacre at my junior high school—the one where I lost everything—I became the one and only... Shadow Lightning. How I lost the girl of my dreams, my classmates, my friends, and my teachers has something to do with the idea, or as I call it, the illusion of Monsters and Humans coexisting.
Laughable, isn't it? How do humans and monsters believe they can coexist with each other? On top of that, these monsters invaded the West. The city of Alexsville wasn't safe by any means from the monsters that struck and started killing people... It wasn't long before the Government stepped in, formed a barrier over the West side of the world, and told the monsters to stay in the countries where coexistence can be a reality.
I'm sure you're wondering how someone like me became Kid Lightning? I'm Half Human and Half Alien. The Alien race me and Owen come from is called the Oshuans. The Oshuans are ancient beings who can bend the elements and harness them to ascend beyond physical limitations.
My father, Grayson Banks, is a metahuman. My mother, Rubecca Oshua, is an alien. Together, they created me and my younger brother, who's now 13 years old. Since I turned 17, I had a plan to finally retire from being Shadow Lightning and allow my brother to carry the mantle as the next generation's Kid Lightning.
But my brother Owen... he had other ideas. Looking back, I wish I had stood my ground. Maybe then, he wouldn't have had to endure my pain. Because back then... he was the optimistic one. And me? I was the cynical one.
August 15th, 2008 – One Day After Owen's 13th Birthday
Carter: "Come on Owen, you cannot be serious."
Owen, standing in Carter's room, told him about Yokai Academy and how the school was once a Monster-Only Educational Facility. Now, it was considered a coexistence school for humans and monsters:
Owen: "Carter, this is our chance to find out why Monsters and Humans want to coexist. Come on, you and I both know they tried this thousands of years ago, and it didn't work. So why are they trying again? Why coexist with species that are just as monstrous as the monsters themselves?"
Carter sighed: "Owen, this sounds like a terrible idea. Especially when you're considering bringing ME into your little investigation."
Owen sighed: "Carter, I understand you don't want to do this. Especially after everything that happened, with you becoming part Vampire too. But don't you want to know why they're doing this? You have to be curious. Tell you what, if there's no reason why everyone's being told humans and monsters can coexist, we stop it in its tracks and get everything back to normal. If there is a reason, we'll bring to their attention the dangers of this becoming reality. Besides, you could use a vacation, right?"
Carter gave Owen a dull expression: "Traveling to a human-monster high school isn't my idea of a vacation. So when are we going to this school?"
Owen, chuckling nervously, replied: "Uh... tomorrow?"
Carter's eyes burned bright red: "TOMORROW!? SO YOU HAD THIS ALL PLANNED FROM THE START!?"
Owen: "Yes?"
Carter calmed down and rolled his eyes: "Fine. Okay. Whatever. And Mom and Dad know about this too, I bet. Whatever. But don't be surprised if you get more than you bargained for."
Owen hugged Carter and thanked him. Afterward, Owen left to pack.
