Carter was the first out of the classroom, moving like a storm cloud, fists clenched in his pockets, eyes shadowed with frustration. Owen followed closely behind, keeping his distance but ready to step in if necessary. He knew how easily Carter's anger could spiral, especially in a place like this.
As they turned a corner, a voice rang out, cutting through the hallway. "Who do you think you are!?"
Carter stopped in his tracks, his back rigid. Slowly, he turned to face the voice, eyes narrowing. It was Ginei Morioka, the werewolf, his hands balled into fists. "Who are you to decide that humans and monsters can't or can coexist? What gives you the right?"
Carter's lips twitched into a mocking smirk. "I didn't decide a damn thing," he said coldly, his voice low and dangerous. His eyes glowed a vibrant, blood-red, fangs barely visible as he spoke. "The world decided the segregation between humans and monsters. You all tried for thousands of years to live together. Did it work then? No! So what makes you think it'll work now, huh? Because you all WISH it would?"
A growl rumbled in Ginei's throat, his werewolf instincts flaring up. "That's in the past! The future doesn't have to repeat itself!"
"Carter, stop," Owen stepped in, his voice calm but firm, trying to de-escalate the tension. "We're not here to pick fights, especially on the first day. We're here to learn—understand why this coexistence might work and, yeah, maybe raise some concerns. But fighting isn't gonna help either side."
Carter's eyes didn't leave Ginei's. "Tell that to the asshole challenging me," he said, his voice cold. He took a step toward Ginei, his posture radiating aggression. "If you think my views on the world are so black and white, why don't you clarify things for me? You. Me. Rooftop. Right now. If you've got the balls for it."
"I've got the balls!" Ginei barked back, his voice a growl. His pride as a werewolf refused to back down, especially in front of the other students now watching the scene unfold. "I'll show you that you're wrong!"
Ginei had a history of trying to prove his worth, especially after being rejected by Moka in the past. This was his chance to fight for something he believed in—and to prove his strength in front of his peers.
Carter grinned, baring his vampire fangs, his eyes flashing with predatory intent. "Good. See you on the rooftop."
Ginei turned and stormed away, the murmurs of students following him as the challenge spread like wildfire through the halls.
As soon as he was out of sight, Owen stepped in front of Carter, his expression worried. "What are you thinking, Carter? We're not here to fight. This isn't what we came for."
Carter scoffed, shaking his head. "Really?" He glanced toward where Ginei had disappeared. "Didn't seem that way to wolf boy back there."
Owen grabbed Carter's arm, stopping him from walking away. "Look, I get it. You're pissed. You've been through hell. But remember what I said—you're stronger than him. Way stronger. You have vampire blood now. If you lose control, you could kill him."
Carter's expression darkened at the mention of his vampire blood, memories of the massacre at his junior high flashing through his mind. "Then maybe he doesn't deserve to live," Carter muttered darkly, though he said it more to himself than Owen.
Owen's eyes widened, panic creeping into his voice. "Carter, no! Come on, you don't mean that. Look, just—knock him out. Show him what real power is, but don't go too far."
For a moment, Carter didn't reply, his gaze distant. Then, seeing the concern etched on his younger brother's face, he let out a heavy sigh. "Alright, alright," he said, rubbing the back of his neck. "I'll knock him out in one punch. I won't kill him, but I'll make sure he learns the consequences of believing in a stupid fantasy."
