The next day, Carter and Owen walked to class amidst the bustling crowd of students. While many students steered clear of Carter, some of the female students seemed curious, eager to understand why he acted the way he did. In contrast, Owen was welcomed with open arms, quickly forming friendships with Kokoa and Haiji.

Carter observed his younger brother from a distance, a complex mix of emotions brewing within him. He felt no jealousy; instead, he knew these students were blissfully unaware of the horrors that plagued their world. They didn't understand the innocent families that had been slaughtered by vampires, or the cannibalistic werewolves that terrorized the night.

He remembered the government experiments back in Towersville, where werewolf DNA had been combined with vampire DNA—an abomination born from misguided ambition. Carter had seen the fallout of these twisted ambitions, the chaos they caused.

In Mr. Todo Uji's classroom, Carter sat at the back, his hood pulled low over his face, staring out the window. To the other students, he was just another wannabe badass trying to make a statement. But that couldn't be further from the truth. Tsukune, Moka, and their harem had fought in the Vampire War and succeeded, but they had never faced the kind of pain Carter had endured. The massacre at his junior high school, the months spent as Shadow Lightning—it had all been pure hell, and no one could understand it. How could they comprehend the consequences of a foolish fantasy?

After class, as students filed out, Mr. Uji called out to Carter. "Stay behind, will you?"

"Big brother," Owen turned, concern etched on his face. "Do you want me to wait?"

Carter shook his head. "Go on. I promise I'll behave."

"I know you will," Owen replied, trusting his brother as he left the room.

Carter turned his gaze back to Mr. Uji, crossing his arms. "What do you want?"

"I agree with you," Mr. Uji said calmly. "Humans and monsters were never meant to coexist. As much as we may wish for it, it will never happen." He paused, choosing his words carefully. "There's a tale about a hybrid like you, who fell in love with a priestess. She betrayed him, using a sacred arrow to cast him into eternal slumber."

"Are you trying to make a point?" Carter asked, irritation creeping into his voice. "If you believe humans and monsters can't coexist, why teach their histories to both? Why not speak against this delusion that's bound to lead to war?"

"Because if I did, I'd be seen as someone who promotes segregation—like you," Mr. Uji replied. "I want to see how this unfolds. Though it has failed many times in the past, we now have the chance to make it work, with advancements in understanding and technology."

"Or we could end up filling the ground with 10x more innocent blood than in the past," Carter snapped. "You keep your beliefs to yourself, but I won't. If that means being isolated just for speaking the truth, then so be it." With that, he stormed out of the classroom, seeking a moment of peace away from the chaos.

Meanwhile, Owen was busy at his locker, slipping his books inside as he mentally checked in on his brother. He knew Carter despised this place and felt the weight of their situation. Owen found the idea of coexistence somewhat comical, given monsters' tendency to give in to their darker impulses. Lost in thought, he didn't notice Kurumu approaching from the opposite side until her tail wrapped around his neck.

Before he could react, Kurumu's fist connected hard with his stomach, sending him crashing onto the soccer field. The impact echoed loudly, catching Carter's attention as he was walking toward the lake. He turned, snarling, "What now?"
