Maya, Lucas, and I sat on the porch as Lucas mom talked to Farkles dad.
"What are they talking about?" Maya asked rocking on the rocking chair.
"Little do I know, my mom and my uncle usually arn't the talking type except for when something big is about to happen." Lucas informed us. Te put a hand on Farkles dads shoulder and hugged him saying something. She turned around and started walking to the porch.
"Mom what's going on?" Lucas questioned.
"I have some bad news. Farkle has been getting very sick as you all notice and his parents have called the doctor. Well he has a chemotherapy appointment next week. He won't be able to do much. He won't be at the support group on Friday. Hopefully it all turns out ok."
We were all silent. I felt horrible, I barely knew this kid. But now I wanted to know all about him.
"When next week?" Maya questioned.
"Saturday. A week from now."
"Can visitors come?" I spoke up.
"Yes from 3:30pm to 5 is visiting hours."
Maya glanced at me a small smile visible on her face.
"Can we go see him?" Lucas said.
"All of you are welcome. I'm sure he will love the company."
She took a seat by Lucas.
"Let's keep him in our prayers. And hope that he gets out okay and is able to return to his life without pain."
I nodded an leaned back in my rocking chair.
We all talked for a few more minutes till my mom showed up.
I looked over at Maya. "You need a ride home?"
"Can I?"
"Of course." I turned to Te and Lucas.
"Thank you for letting me stay and for everything before that. I enjoyed myself alot."
Te smiled and put a hand on my cheek.
"You are very welcome sunshine. You are welcome any time you want. I love the company."
She hugged me and so did Lucas.
"Bye Riley. See you soon." Lucas said.
I nodded making my way down the steps, Maya coming after saying her goodbyes. I ran up to the car window mom rolling it down.
"Can we give Maya a ride?" I asked.
"Of course. She can stay as long as she likes." Mom smiled.
I returned the grin both of us getting into the back of the car, watching mom wave at Lucas mom.
"Did you two have fun?" Mom started as we drove off.
"For the most part." Maya mumbled sadly.
"Mom- we have a friend named Farkle. And he has gotten really sick with Wilms tumor. Well next Saturday he is going into chemotherapy and they have visiting hours. I was wondering if I would be able to visit, and maybe Maya could tag along?" I looked hopefully in moms direction, skipping right to the point.
Mom stopped the car at a red light and turned around looking at us both.
"You think I have the heart to say no?"
She turned back around as the light went green.
"You both are more than welcome to go see your friend Farkle. And Maya I will be happy to pick you up. You both will make him so glad."
"Thank you mom."
"Thank you..." Maya pondered wondering what to call my mom.
"You can call me Topanga." Mom answered.
"Thank you Topanga."

I laid on my bay window tapping my pencil against my teeth and softly biting the eraser. I looked down at my empty notebook paper. I had taken up the option of writing about how cancer has taught me morals of life that I wouldn't have known before.
I touched the tip of the lead to the paper.
"The question asked was, what can cancer teach you? Well, you learn to love your life. You learn to hold on to the littlest of moments, because those little moments make a big impact for what you're going to say at someone else's funeral." I wrote out. I scanned over it a couple times before I began to write again.
I stopped and erased the last sentance chuckling at myself.
I put down my pencil in the middle of the page closing it.
I walked out into the living room where Auggie was sleeping on the couch and mom was making dinner.
I took a seat next to Auggie and blankly stared at the kids show, showing on the tv. After a few minutes I felt the couch dip next to me. I glanced over at dad.
"You're getting off of the couch." He laughed.
"It was bound to happen sometime."
"So who are you hanging out with lately?"
"Some friends from support group and the girl upstairs, Maya. She's also in the support group." I told him.
"Ahh, I knew that support group would help you. Your mom wasn't to keen on it but after some convincing I got her to say yes."
I nodded. "Thank you though. For convincing her to do that, it's helped me a lot ."
Dad patted my shoulder and started to get up.
"Wait dad?"
"Yeah honey?"
"Remember when you told me about when Shawn's dad was in the hospital?"
"Yeah. It didn't end so well."
"Well I have a friend and he is going to be in the hospital and I'm going to visit him. And it may or may not turn out so well, what do I do?"
Dad put a hand on my knee.
"Support group friend?"
"Yeah."
Dad sighed and sat up. "I think Shawn would be able to tell you what to do better than I could."
"Wait, what are you saying?"
"I'm saying you know where your phone is and you know his number."
I smiled and hugged dad kissing his cheek before going to my room sitting on my bed and calling Shawn.
I honestly didn't know what to say without upsetting him.
It was like saying "tell me about when your dad died and what you did"
But Farkle wasn't my dad, he was a friend. A friend that I didn't know very well, that made me feel awful.
"Hey Riley." Shawn greeted.
"Hey Shawn."
"You sound troubled, are you okay?"
I softly laughed. "How'd you know?"
"Because usually when you talk you sound really energetic. You don't."
"Well I have a problem with a friend and my dad told me I should talk to you about it."
I could hear Shawn chuckle on the other end of the line.
"Well what's this problem?" Shawn asked.
"I have a friend and he has cancer, like me. He's going into chemotherapy on Saturday and I want to visit him before he goes through it. But I don't know what I should say to him."
"Are you coming to me because of what happened with my dad?"
"Sort of. Sorry." I apologized
"Nah, it's fine. Anyways, how close are you to this friend?"
"We're not really close, I talked to him in support group and at a party and that's it. But I want to know him more, he seems like a really nice guy and I want to be there for him." I explained
"Does he have a phone that you can call him?" Shawn asked.
"My friend Maya probably has his number."
"Okay good after you get off the phone with me it would be a good idea for you to call him. But when you see him you should tell him supportive things, live that he will get through this. Make conversation, and it doesn't necessarily have to be about the chemotherapy."
I took mental notes about what he said.
"Is that what you did with your dad?"
"It's all I could do Riley."
I nodded. "Will I see you soon?" I questioned leaning on my elbow.
"Yeah, yeah of course. I'll talk to your dad and see if I can come by this weekend." Shawn answered, I could hear him smiling through the phone.
"Ok good. Bye uncle Shawn love you."
"Love you too, see you soon."
The line went dead and I pulled up Maya's number and started texting
