"Ms. Hart, something's wrong with Maya." I said seriously.
Katy's eyes widened at my words and the sight of her sobbing daughter in my arms. She opened the door wider and I rushed in to put Maya on the couch.
I took Mary from Katy's arms putting her in her swing.

"Mommy, please it hurts." Maya cried rolling onto her side.
"Riley can you get an ice pack, please?"
I nodded quickly getting an ice pack.

My heart broke when Maya looked at me with her big blue eyes, that stood out in the sea of red beside them. Big tears rolled down her cheeks and her eyes pleaded for mercy.

"I'm gonna call the doctor baby. It shouldn't be this bad." Katy said holding back her own grief as she got up to find the phone.

I sat down next to Maya and held her. Her body racked with pain and sobs.
"Riley make it stop. Please." She begged.

I could feel my heart being brown with every cry that left her mouth. Every time I look into her once happy blue eyes, I saw ones that were drowning in tears of pain and fear. I pulled her closer to me wrapping my arms around her my tears falling into her hair.

"We have to take her to the doctor." Katy said frantically.
I nodded and helped Maya to sit up.
"I got her." I said picking up Maya.  She whimpered as I did reaching for her knee. Katy held Mary in her arms and we quickly left the house.
~
We all sat in the waiting room. Dad and mom had came and Auggie was at school.

I drummed my fingers on the chair biting my lip hard. We were not at a hospital, we were somewhere worse. The cancer center. I found it worse always coming to the cancer center. Because the nurses and doctors were always meaner, and the rooms were always more still and depressing.

I stood up the attention from our group turning to me.
"I'll be right back."
I walked out of the two sliding doors into the outside world that was glared by the orange setting sun. My eyes diverted to the above.

The sky was a mixture of blue and pink, like it God had spilled paint and pink and blue blended together.
I took a deep breath and got out my phone dialing Lucas number.
It ringed a few times and then he picked up.

"Hey Riley. You good?"
"Lucas, I'm going to tell you something that will either make you lash out in anger or sadness, or you will do neither and stand in place confused to high hells."
"Okay? What are you going to tell me?"

I took one last deep breath before I spoke, making sure my voice wouldn't crack and that I wouldn't double over in tears.

"Mayas been in a lot of pain since this morning. Mainly it's her knee, where she had osteosarcoma. She took me out to give a letter to her dad and while we were getting out of the cab in front of the car she fell, and was in too much pain to move anymore."
"Fuck. Fuck fuck fuck FUCK" Lucas exclaimed.

I sat down on the cold snowy bench tears appearing on my cheeks.
"I know." I whispered.
"Where is she?"
"At the cancer center." I hiccuped.
I could hear Lucas's heavy breathing on the other line.

"Have they given you any word yet?"
"No. Nothing."
Lucas sighed again and I swore I could hear his voice crack.

I could picture him. Sitting up in bed one hand over his mouth holding back the tears, the basketball he was throwing up and catching now rolling off the bed making a thump on the ground.

"Tell me when you find out more, okay?" Lucas asked.
"I will." I sobbed.
"Stay strong for her Riley. She probably needs you more than anyone else in that waiting room."
I inhaled through my nose and nodded.
"Okay. Okay."
"I'll talk to you later. Bye Riley."
"Bye Lucas."

I put my phone back in my jacket pocked and wiped my eyes.
I stayed outside for a little more watching the snowflakes fall from the grey sky, then getting up and going back inside.

A couple minutes later the doctor came out of the hallway his hands in his pockets.

"The Hart family?" He asked.
We all looked up.
"The cancer has not returned. She is still cancer free." He said.

We all breathed a sigh of relief then took it back because Maya was still in extreme pain and we didn't know why.

"But the cancer did eat away at her bone marrow. And it has caused for very low levels of marrow and her left lower leg bone has severely weakened which is why she is in so much pain." He explained.
"Well what can we do?" Katy questioned.
"We have two options. One she can go handicap in a wheelchair. Two we can amputate her right leg, top of the knee down."

We all went silent and my stomach dropped.
~
Maya sat with me on the bay window her wheelchair by the bed.
Her hair crowded her face and she gripped onto the ends of the seat.

"I'M GONNA LOOSE MY FUCKING LEG!" Maya yelled.

I held back the gallon of tears I felt behind my eyes and pushed back Maya's hair.

Her eyes were bloodshot and she had tears streaming down her cheeks.

"This always happens." She shook.
"What does baby girl?" I asked pulling her into my lap being cautious of her leg."
"I always reach the happiest point then something bad always happens. And I'm right back where I started."
"No your not. Because I'm here, and I'll always be here. Through thick and thin."
"How do you always have so much hope?"
"Because somebody taught me how to have hope, and why you should. Do you know who that somebody is?"
"Me." Maya answered.

I put two fingers under her chin.
"And now I'm gonna teach you. Have hope Maya, because you never know what's going to happen. Could be good or bad."

Maya wiped her tears. "You'll still love me even with one leg?"
"More than ever." I said kissing her wet cheeks.

She put her head in her hands and I rubbed her back.
"Look Maya, people didn't fall in love with you because you have four limbs. People fell in love with you because of your personality and love twords others. You are beautiful with four, three, two, or one limbs. Just keep being you."

She looked up at me with her blue eyes.
I pushed back hair hair so I could see her full face and kissed her nose and forehead.
~ *1 day later*
My family stood on the sidewalk saying goodbye to Maya, who was in her wheelchair.

Katy and Shawn were bringing her to the hospital and staying till the operation was over, and were leaving Mary with us.

My mom leaned down Maya kissing Mary on the forehead. She looked twords me and weakly smiled.
I walked twords her wrapping my arms around her.

"I'm going to miss you." She sighed.
"I'm going to miss you more." I said back. I deeply inhaled her scent and let a tear fall onto her shoulder.
"I love you." Maya said.

I put a hand on her cheek. "I love you too."

And I kissed her with all the passion I could, like it would be the last time I felt her lips on mine.

•Katy•
Shawn and I sat in empty waiting room holding onto eachothers hands.

We were both exhausted but couldn't sleep in the hard chairs and the thought of Maya under the knife.

A nurse walked into the waiting room.
Shawn and I perked up immediately anxious for answers.

She stood in front of us and began to smile.
"She's okay."
