•Riley•
"Riley you ready for support group?" My mom asked getting her keys and purse.
"Yeah just a second! I yelled from my room. I got up running to my closet throwing on my pink sandals that matched my white jeans and floral shirt. I fixed my hair in the mirror, grabbed my phone and went to the kitchen kissing Auggie and dad goodbye.
I smiled at mom and we headed out the door.
"Is Maya going to support group?" Mom wondered turning the keys. As if on cue my phone started to ring Maya's name displayed at the top.
"Let's find out." I said pressing the phone to my ear.
"Hey Maya."
"Girl are you going to support group? I can't sit in there for 45 minutes by myself."
"Well you seemed to be doing just fine before I came?"
"Because my friend used to sit in your seat but he got crushed."
"Oh, I'm sorry Maya." I said sympathetically.
"Nah she got crushed by your ass, she's imaginary." Maya laughed.
I furrowed my brow in confusion and mouthed towards mom "she's weird" and mom chuckled.
"Oh, well I'm sorry I crushed your friend. And to answer your original question, yes I'm going to support group were driving there now."
"Ok good, I'll see you there. I'll wait at the front." Maya told me.
"Alright see you then, bye." I hung up the phone.
"You crushed her friend?" Mom gasped hinting a smile.
"Yup I proudly crushed her imaginary friend with my ass." I said laughing.
Mom playfully slapped my knee.
"Thats so mean Riley. You should watch where you sit."
"Well they do call me Riley super clutz."
"Oh yeah? They need to come up with a different name like Riley super crush."
"Hahhh, hahh." I smiled rolling my eyes.We drove into the parking lot 10 minutes early. Mom pulled up to the curb where I gave her a kiss on the cheek and left.
I walked into the library the smell of books meeting my nose. I felt a peice of my hair being tugged. I jumped and saw Maya smirking behind me.
"Scared the shit out of you aye?"
"I thought you were some kind of rapist." I panted putting a hand over my chest.
"Yup thats me, Maya the rapist." She joked walking beside me as we made our way to the meeting room.
"Sounds accurate." I said.
"Because it is." Maya responded evily wiggling her eyebrows.
I stared at her for a moment then busted out laughing her joining in soon after.
"SHH!" A sharp voice shushed. I looked over at the desk where a grumpy lady was sitting a Peoples magazine scattered infront of her.
"Well fuck you too then." Maya whispered.
I silently giggled and continued walking.
"So, do you know if Farkle is going to be here?" I asked trying to start a conversation.
"I have no idea, I stopped by yesterday before dark and Lucas said that he hadn't thrown up all day and that he was fine. But Lucas knows how much Farkles health concerns me so he brightens everything up a bit so I honestly don't believe that they had a puke free day with him." Maya told me.
I nodded and stuffed my hands in my back pockets.
"I feel so bad for him. It's horrible what cancer does to all of us." I sighed.
"Yeah. I wish it didn't have to be this way."
We walked into the room where a couple kids were. I spotted Lucas leaning on the wall in the corner looking down at his phone.
Maya whisled making him look up and make his way over.
"Hey Ranger Rick." Maya greeted hugging him.
"Hey." He greeted back glancing over at me.
"Riley, glad you came. So did you decide if your gonna stay in the group?" Lucas questioned a big grin on his face.
"I think I am, I like it." I said.
"Good. And how were the macaroons?"
"Amazing. I want more." I complimented.
"Well you can always stop by and get some. Their free for close friends and family."
"Awe, thank you. Thats really nice." I said.
"Farkles not here?" Maya examined.
"Nope, his mom said his temperature was high and that he was woozy."
"Typical." Maya sighed pushing her hair behind her ear.
"Hey Riley, are you doing anything after support group? We're having a little dinner at my house for some of my friends. Was wondering if you wanted to come?" Lucas offered.
"Nothing that I know of. Are you coming?" I asked Maya.
"Yeah. They have awesome food."
"I thought you said you hated our 'good eatin, wholesome livin, and the natural cornucopia of the earths bounty'."
"Those were the muffins. Remeber those? Ha hurrrr." Maya teased getting up in his face.
"Oh how could I forget the wonderful sounds of that ha hur that stuck all through 7th grade."
"My mom is gonna pick Maya up, I'm sure she wouldn't mind another girl tagging along. After all, we have enough good to feed the state of New York."
Maya beamed and turned twords me.
"Its pretty good, you should come." Maya reassured putting a hand on my shoulder.
"I'm gonna go check with my Mom, I'll be right back." I said leaving the room.
I dialed my mom putting it to my ear.
"Hello Riley? You okay?"
"I'm fine. I was gonna ask if it was okay if I could go to my friend Lucas's house for a dinner party his mom could pick me up, Maya is going also."
"Oh Riley."
"What? Whats wromg?"
"I love that you're making friends. Of course you can go. I'm so happy for you baby. Have fun. I love you."
"Love you too." I said.
I hung up confusion covering my face.
She's treating this like I've never had friends before.
I left the hallway going back into the room going over to Maya and Lucas.
"How'd it go?" Lucas questioned.
"I can go." I responded.
"Good, you will love it I promise." He remarked.
"Okay children, lets take our seats!" Mrs. Katherine shouted clapping her hands.
We walked over to the blue plastic chairs and sat down in a circle.
"So how is everyone doing today?" Mrs. Katherine called out getting a mumbled "good" from everyone in the group.
"Wonderful. So I have decided to assign a little project for you guys. So next friday I will ask the question, what can cancer teach you? It's an independent speech and it would be wonderful to hear from everyone of you."
"Do we really have to do this?" I whispered to Maya.
"Just make up the excuse 'I wasn't feeling good' and you don't have to do this. I use it all the time." Maya whispered back.
I nodded and turned my attention back to Mrs. Katherine.
"Please consider doing this project, I would really love listening to all of your opinions about what cancer taught you."
"It taught me that support groups are shit." I mumbled and Maya silently laughed.
~
"Hey Lucas, Maya, and new girl. Hello."
"Hey mom, this is Riley. She's another close friend."
I smiled at his mom. I couldn't believe she was his mom, she looks so young. Her jeans were patched with different color fabrics and she was wearing a softball T-Shirt. She had waist long curly brown hair and a thick southern accent. You could see that her and Lucas were related he had her eyes, hair, cheekbones, smile.
"Well hello Riley. Nice to meet you, I'm Theresa but you can call me Te."
"Nice to meet you too." I said closing the door.
Lucas and his mom started to talk both Maya and I kept silent trying our best not to listen in and be rude so I focused on the music coming from the radio.
The car stopped and I looked up at the house. Then I looked around no houses, no buildings, no taxis. Where where we?
"Welcome to our home Riley." Te said getting out of the car. The house was a cream color and the front porch was the same color. There were 2 black rocking chair on the front porch with a knit blankets over them, also a black porch swing with orange pillows.
Totally not New York material.
I looked twords Maya who looked completely neutral.
She looked up and chuckled at my face.
"They built their house in the middle of nowhere so they could still get the quote and quote country feel."
"I didn't know we had that feel here in New York." I said sarcastically.
"Neither did I but they took that feel with them when they moved from Texas." She joked.
I giggled and followed them inside.
"Make yourself at home, a handful more people are going to come. I'm gonna start dinner." Te told us.
"Thank you mom, follow me." Lucas said going up the stairs.
Maya and I followed him upstairs and into a room.
There were red and blue bunk beds pushed up against the wall and a tiny basketball hoop over the window.
There was a raido playing country music in the corner of his dresser and boots next to it.
"So this is my room, we can hang here."
"Wheres your little sister?" Maya asked hanging onto the door handle.
"In her room I think."
Maya ran down the hall stopping at a door knocking.
"Give me your money." She growled.
"MAYA!" A little voice yelled opening the door and jumping in her arms.
"MY GIRLY! I MISSED YOUUU!" Maya picked her up spinning her around and tickled her the girl then erupting into little giggles.
Maya put her down taking her hands.
"Riley this is Claire, Lucas's little sister."
"Hi." She greeted cutely waving her little hands.
"Do y'all wanna go outside?" Lucas offered.
"Sure." We all answerd going downstairs again and out the front door.
I took a seat next to Maya on the swings, swinging gently.
We all sat on the swings talking for an hour, several more cars pulling up kids getting out everyone sitting out hanging on the front porch till dinner was done.
Maya told me that it was almost everyone from their 7th grade class.
Darby, Yogi, Sarah, Zay. And then Hannah from the support group came and surprisingly her and Maya were getting along.
A black car pulled up by the curb. I squinted my eyes to get a good look but I couldn't. The door slowly opened and we saw one foot, then the other.
"FARKLE!" Everybody screamed.
Lucas mom came out of the house and wiped her hands on her apron. She made her way down the steps and out to the car.
"Hello Stewart, thank you for bringing him." She said giving Farkles dad a hug. They talked while Farkle carefully walked to the porch.
Maya was the first to get up wrapping him in a hug.
"You okay?" She checked putting a hand on his cheek.
"I'm good. Thank you. How are you?"
"Awesome now that you're here."
Farkle smiled and sat next to Lucas on the floor.
"Hey Riley." Farkle gleemed.
"Hey, glad you're here."
The car drove up and Te walked inside
"Dinner everybody!" She yelled out. We all smiled and went inside. It smelled absolutely amazing.
"Grab your plates over here then go down the line and grab what you want, then you can take a seat at the table."
Lucas mom directed leaving the room.
We all did as she told filling up the table. Everyone was talking and laughing as country music added white noise.
"So did you guys graduate 8th grade?" Maya asked.
"Yeah, finally." Sarah laughed.
"Who cried?" Darby teased nudging her.
Maya almost choked on her food.
"Sarah cried?!"
"I have emotions!" They both started laughing.
~
I looked at my phone then back at Maya.
"How can saying 'mom I'm going to spend the night at a boys house, but Maya's going to be here' make that question any better?"
"Because it always works with my
mom. Just do it Riles."
Riles?
"Riles?" I said weirly.
"Yeah sorry haha, I was worked up I guess." Maya apologized her face turning red.
"No its okay, I like it."
Maya smiled as I called my mom.
"Riley? When are you coming home?"
"Hey so about that, would it be okay if I were to spend the night? Maya and a couple of other girls are sleeping here too its like a big slumber party." I explained.
"Your sure you'll be okay? I mean you don't have any overnight stuff?" Mom asked.
"Yeah I'll be fine, thank you mom."
"You're welcome Riley, have fun baby. I love you."
"Love you too." I said hanging up.
I gave Maya a thumbs up and she smiled.
We both got up walking into Lucas room us stepping over the sleeping bodies.
I laid down near the window Maya lying next to me.
"So what do you think of the support group thing?" Maya questioned.
"I think I'm gonna do it, because honestly cancer has taught me morals about life that I wouldn't know if I wasn't worrying that any day could be my last. What about you?"
"Ahh. I don't know if I am. I really don't want to to a cliché report."
I laughed and looked into the moon.
"Well I would love to see you do a report."
"Thanks."
I stared into the white circle letting my eyes catch every visible crater.
"You know your eyes look really pretty when you look into bright things. They like glow."
I felt my heart flutter and my cheeks go hot.
"Thank you." I said.
"No problem."
I waited a few minutes than glanced over at Maya. Her eyes were closed, lips parted, and her eyelashes so softly resting on her perfect rosy cheeks.
She's even more beautiful, and every part of her.
