*2 months earlier*I got off the subway 3 blocks away from my house. I sighed and re adjusted my bookbag strap on my shoulder. I started to walk down the streets of the Bronx keeping my fists clenched and my head down. It started to get colder as the sun went further down and I shivered. It wasn't like my apartment would be any better, we don't have a heater.
I opened the door to the apartment lobby that was overwhelmed by the sounds of the desk clerk snoring. A group of men sat behind the stairs playing chess quietly, one of them glanced at me and I quickly turned my head away going up the stairs. I stood outside the door hearing yelling coming from the inside. I shook my head unlocking the door.
"YOU NEVER PAY FOR ANYTHING! ALL THE MONEY THAT I MAKE FOR THIS HOUSE YOU TAKE AND SPEND IT ON METH!" My mom yelled.I ran into my room leaning against the door, I took off my backpack and cried hearing the commotion from the kitchen.
"MAYBE I HAVE TO SPEND IT ON THAT BECAUSE YOU AND MAYA DRIVE ME INSANE!" My dad sneered back.
I wiped away my tears and put my head down on the pillow looking out the window. The sun was now gone from the sky and the city lights were on.
"YOU'RE THE SHITTIEST FATHER I'VE EVER FUCKING KNOWN I DON'T EVEN KNOW WHY I MARRIED YOU!"
"BECAUSE YOU WERE YOUNG AND STUPID JUST LIKE YOU ARE NOW!"
I started to get hungry and got up off my bed and started my journey through the war zone. I opened the fridge and once again, it was empty.
I turned around just in time to see my dad push my mom. She fell back onto the couch and he climbed on top of her pinning her hands to her sides.
She jerked underneath him kicking her legs as he got closer to her. He raised his hand over his head bringing it down on her face loudly. I screamed running over punching his back with all I could. There were several bangs on the door and loud voices that were unclear over my screams. My dad got off my mom and grabbed me by the wrist hard.
The door broke down and police men ran in jumping on my dad tackling him to the floor putting him in handcuffs.I looked down at my wrist at the forming bruise then looked at my mom who was sobbing, her hands over her face and knees against her baby bump.
*Present day*
All of that was forgotten when I looked into my baby sisters face. She was beautiful. Her pale skin was so soft to the touch and she had fuzzy blond hair. Her little hands reached up and she turned her head twords me yawning, then opening her baby blue eyes. I smiled poking her fists with my pointer finger, and she wrapped her smaller ones around it.
I felt a tear fall from my eye as I watched her look around the white room, observing everything her little eyes could. Riley put a hand on my lower back and pulled me close. I put my head on her shoulder both of us memorized by the pink bundle of joy I held in my arms. I looked over at Riley and her expression warmed my heart.
"Do you want to hold her?" I asked. Her grin got bigger and she nodded. I placed the little girl in her arms and she rubbed her cheek with her thumb.
I glanced up at everyone in the hospital room. Shawn, Mr. and Mrs. Matthews, and Auggie who was sleeping on his dad's shoulder. My mom was resting in the hospital bed, exhausted. Shawn sat next to her, holding onto her hand. When I looked back down at Mary she was asleep.
Riley leaned into me. "She really was a little miracle."
I kissed her cheek and put my hands on top her hers.~ *1 day later*
The blinds were open in my moms hospital room letting in natural light that made my sisters eyes even bluer. I was sitting cross cross on my moms hospital bed, watching Mary while she took a shower.
