"It's nice to see you again" I replied, making my way to his side. Standing before the overseer feeling his poise presence pouring over me. I wrap my arms around him in a warm embrace, and notice that he is frozen in place.
The overseer's height is towering over mine by several feet. His presence feels comforting with a mix of an intimidating aura that envelops over the space between us. I pull back slightly, looking up to meet his gaze.
"Feel free to give me a hug back one of these days," I say jokingly.
He hesitates for a second, and then slowly wraps his arms around me, returning the hug I gave. When I pull away, he tilts his head slightly with a hint of curiosity in his eyes.
"A hug," he muses, his brow furrowing ever so slightly. "Are these greetings considered... normal?"
I chuckle and smile as I say, "Yes they are."
He smiles back at me and says,"You teach me new things all time, Samantha. Thank you!"
"You're welcome." I replied softly
My words linger in the air as a stillness settles between us, the soft ruffling of leaves around us in the only sound. He stands there with the faintest smile on his lips, and a softness in his eyes that was never there before.
The warmth in his smile is a small comfort, but it can't chase away the questions swirling around in my head. Tonight I need to see the truth, and get to the bottom of where my mother has been all this time.
"I need you to show me my mother's dreams," I say with a firm voice. "As many as you can."
He hesitates for a moment, his expression shifting with concern. "Are you certain? Dreams can be fragmented and chaotic. I wouldn't want to overwhelm you." he explains, trying to warn me.
I know that no matter what I do, I will always wonder about the truth. What actually happened the moment she opened her eyes and realized she didn't land at the airport? That first moment of awareness, the second her eyes opened- she must have been terrified.
"I have to know," I say, my voice steady as I stand firm in my decision.
The overseer shifts slightly, uncertainty flickering in his eyes, as if my resolve surprises him.
Glancing towards the pond, my thoughts drift back to the past. "Can I tell you a story?" I ask, a hint of vulnerability in my voice.
He nods his head and responds, "Yes, go ahead."
"For a while I thought it was normal for it be just my mom and I," I began, my memory resurfacing.
"One day, my mom and I went to the grocery store. Which is a place where everyone goes to in order to buy food." I say trying to give context.
"Food?" He says with a confused look on his face.
"Yes, food. You eat it!" I replied with a playful gesture, mimicking chewing motions before noticing just how silly I look.
"Anyways, we were looking for items on our list as we strolled through an isle. Eventually we come across a family. There was a little boy standing next to his mom and dad. Later that day I got the courage to ask my mom about my father."
Before continuing, I swallow hard as the old ache resurfaces.
"She told me my father passed away before I was born. Finding that out stung at first, but it made me cling even tighter to my mother."
"Then as I grew older, I asked her about our family. She told me that we were all that was left of the Thompsons- just the two of us" I say with tears filling my eyes.
"It didn't bother me that we only had each other, but now that I'm looking back... why didn't she tell me on her own?" I question.
Kneeling down towards the ground, i glance back at the small pond in front of me. My finger taps against the top of the water creating ripple after ripple. The water trembles against my touch, reflecting the quiet pain inside of me.
Leaning closer, I feel a tear slip free, falling silently into the water. The tear is lost in the waves of the water, as if it never existed, and was part of the pond all along.
"We're all just like these fish" I whispered, watching them swim beneath the surface. "So small, and constantly unaware that the world is much bigger than us," I say.
