Overseer💫
The weight of her sorrows begins to build a deep sympathetic feeling within me. For eons, I stood apart from humans, untouched by their emotions, existing in the quiet consistency of my realm. But now with Samantha here, things are different.
I feel an undeniable pull towards her that builds as we engage, yet it's something I don't fully understand. Even her search for answers seems to reflect a part of me that I've long forgotten.
"You asked me once," I say breaking the silence, if I was truly all alone here." I hesitate, recalling a faint echo of a memory.
"When I was first created, there must have been another being here with me. I'm certain of it, though the memory is a bit faint." I say trying to remember the fuzzy pieces.
"Not knowing all the answers is apart of both of our... what did you call it? Stories?" I question and then continue, "I'll do my best to help you find the answers you're looking for. I'll guide you through your mother's dreams- as many dreams as I can."
Samantha stands up and wipes the tears from her eyes with the sides of her fingers. "Okay," she says, her voice steady. "I'm ready. Let's do this!"
With a slow gesture of my hand, the dreamscape begins to shift around us. The colors blur and fade, melting as it forms something new. We stand in a dimly lit room, traces of light filtering through the curtained window.
Her mother is sitting in a chair, holding a small red box with black striped lines. There's something peaceful about the moment, almost too peaceful.
Samantha watches intently, her brow furring as she searches the dream for meaning. Her mother's face is calm, but there's a weight in her eyes- a heaviness that mirrors the burdens Samantha now carries.
In the box, she pulls out a couple of papers and looks at them. Her mother almost empties the box, at the bottom is a small picture. As she carefully pulls it out, Samantha walks forward trying to get a better look.
She holds the picture up and it is a baby, wrapped in a blanket, and placed in a basket.
"Was that me?" Samantha wonders.
"It could be, or it could be something yet not understood." I say.
With another gesture, the scene shifts, images twist and reform. Some of the dreams I show Samantha are meaningless- small fragments of forgotten nights, flashes of mundane life that seem to hold no weight.
I know that I can't delay the inevitable. Samantha is relentlessly searching for something. I think I know just the dream to show her next, the one of her mother's plane incident.
The colors blur in and out, and this time everything around us dissolves into a cloud of smoke. This time we're outside.
A vast, open sky stretches above, and all around us is debris. We navigate through broken up metal surrounded by luggage near our feet.
The familiar cries from the people trapped in seats and coughs fill the scene. I watch a Samantha's eyes are wide, looking at the destruction around her.
Her mother stumbles out, with not many scratches or bruises. She walks for a minute, possibly looking for help. Then she trips over her feet, falling hard onto the floor.
A man slowly appears in the distance walking towards her, noticing how weak and frail she seems. The dream starts to fade away and Samantha immediately asks, "Please can I see this dream again, just one more time from the beginning?"Samantha watched thoroughly as we rewatched the dream before us. A faint shimmer catches Samantha's eye as she watches her mother stumble and fall. A small silver trinket slips from her pocket as she falls.
"I didn't notice that before. It could be a coin or a button." Samantha says stepping closer. Her attention then shifts to the man that walks in front of her and she focuses on him.
"He has a scar on his face." She reaches up and touches her left cheek where the small gash on his left cheek is. As the dream starts to fade out I hold up my hand in order to show her another dream, but before i could Samantha places her hand on my arm.
"Before you show me another dream, can I ask you-"
Before she could get another word out, she's yet again pulled away from the dream realm. Sucked back into her reality, that even I could only dream about.
