Phacochoerus is a genus in the family , commonly known as warthogs (pronounced wart-hog).
They are pigs who live in open and semi-open habitats, even in quite arid regions, in . The two species were formerly considered under the scientific name Phacochoerus aethiopicus, but today this is limited to the , while the best-known and most widespread species, the (or simply warthog), is Phacochoerus africanus.
The common warthog's main predators are lions, leopards, cheetahs, crocodiles, wild dogs and hyenas. Birds of prey such as Verreaux's eagle owls and martial eagles sometimes prey on piglets.
Warthogs need to watch out for those predators They would rather flee than fight and are surprisingly fast. They can run up to 35 mph. They can fight as well and will defend themselves with their formidable tusks when cornered or challenged.
