Chapter 10: Beneath the Surface

"Jackson, I have to know," I said, my voice barely above a whisper.

"What is it, Emily?" His eyes locked onto mine, filled with concern.

"Who are you, really?" I asked, my heart racing.

Jackson's expression changed, a flicker of surprise.

"What do you mean?" he asked, cautious.

"I mean, what's your past? Your secrets?" I pressed.

Jackson sighed, running a hand through his hair.

"I've told you, Emily. I'm just a guy who—"

"No," I interrupted. "There's more."

"I see it in your eyes," I said. "A sadness. A weight."

Jackson looked away, his jaw clenched.

"You don't know what you're talking about," he muttered.

"I do," I insisted. "I see the pain you hide."

Jackson's gaze snapped back to mine.

"How do you—?"

"I understand pain," I said softly. "I've lived it."

Jackson's expression softened.

"Emily..."

"Trust me," I whispered. "Tell me."

Jackson's eyes searched mine.

"Okay," he said finally. "But promise me—"

"Anything," I vowed.

"Promise me you'll listen with an open heart."

"I promise."

Jackson took a deep breath.

"I've made mistakes, Emily. Bad ones."

My heart skipped a beat.

"What kind?"

Jackson's voice dropped to a whisper.

"I hurt people. People I cared about."

My mind reeled.

"Why?"

Jackson's eyes filled with regret.

"I was lost. Consumed by darkness."

I reached out, taking his hand.

"You're not that person now."

Jackson's gaze met mine.

"Are you sure?"

"I am," I said firmly.

Jackson's fingers intertwined with mine.

"Emily, I—"

"Shh," I whispered. "Just be honest."

Jackson nodded.

"I'll never hurt you," he vowed.

My heart swelled.

"I know."

As we stood there, hands entwined, I felt the weight of Jackson's secrets lifting.

"I'll help you through this," I promised.

Jackson's eyes filled with gratitude.

"Thank you, Emily."

Together, we took a step forward.

Into the unknown.

Into healing.

With every step, Jackson's past unfolded.

A tapestry of pain and regret.

But also of hope and redemption.

I listened, my heart open.

As Jackson's secrets became our shared burden.

We walked hand in hand, into the sunset.

A new path unfolded.

One of healing.

Of trust.

Of love.
