Chapter 20: Shattered Night

Emily's eyes locked onto the boy from the carnival, her mind racing. How did he find her? The nightclub's pulsating music and flashing lights blurred into the background.

The boy's smile sent shivers down Emily's spine. He weaved through the crowd, approaching their VIP area.

"Emily, let's go," Maddie urged.

But Emily was paralyzed. The boy's eyes seemed to hold a dark secret.

"Emily," he whispered, his voice barely audible over the music.

Emily's heart pounded. She grabbed Maddie's hand, and they pushed through the crowd.

"Where's Jackson?" Emily asked, frantic.

Maddie pulled out her phone. "I'll text him."

As they rushed toward the exit, Emily felt the boy's gaze lingering on her.

Outside, Emily and Maddie caught their breath. Jackson's response arrived: "On my way."

A chilling message appeared on Emily's phone: "You can't escape me."

The boy from the carnival stood across the street, watching Emily.

Emily knew she had to protect herself and Maddie. "We need to get out of here, now."

Maddie hailed a taxi. As they sped away, Emily realized the boy's true intentions remained unknown.

The taxi screeched through the streets, Emily's heart racing with every turn.

"Where are we going?" Maddie asked.

"Anywhere but here," Emily replied.

Jackson's texts flooded her phone: "Where r u? R u safe?"

Emily responded: "We're safe. Meet us at Maddie's."

As they fled, Emily's mind replayed the carnival encounter. The boy's smile, his eyes, the eerie feeling...

Maddie grasped Emily's hand. "You're safe now."

But Emily knew the boy's presence shattered her sense of security.

Jackson awaited them at Maddie's house, worry etched on his face.

"Thank God you're safe," he whispered, embracing Emily.

Emily broke down, tears streaming down her face.

Emily's mind reeled with questions. Who was this boy? What did he want?

She felt trapped, her emotions in chaos.

Jackson's reassuring arms enveloped her. "I'm here, Emily."

But even his love couldn't dispel the darkness.

Sleep eluded Emily. The boy's smile haunted her dreams.

She woke with a start, Jackson's concerned face above hers.

"Hey, it's okay," he whispered.

But Emily knew it wasn't okay. Fear had taken hold.

Emily confided in Maddie. "I feel like I'm losing my grip."

Maddie listened, her eyes filled with empathy.

"We'll face this together," Maddie promised.

Emily's phone buzzed with another message:

"Jackson isn't as innocent as you think."

Her heart sank. What did this mean?

Emily's mind reeled with questions:

Was Jackson hiding something?

Was he involved with the mysterious boy?
