__________________________________________________________________________________"Beep... beep... beep..." The shrill sound of the alarm clock pierced through the silence of Shree's cozy bedroom, forcing her out of her dreams and into a state of blurry consciousness. With groggy eyes, she squinted at the clock on her bedside table.
“8:15 AM!” she gasped, leaping out of bed as if someone had set her mattress on fire. “Oh God, Shree! College ke pehle hi din late—ho gaya syapa!” she mumbled frantically, running a hand through her messy hair before bolting towards the washroom.
( Oh god, Shree! Late on the first day of College )
Once inside, she turned on the shower and splashed cold water onto her face, hoping it would wake her up. She barely took ten minutes to shower, brush, and put on a light layer of moisturizer. Another five minutes were spent untangling the knots in her long, silky black hair before letting it cascade freely around her shoulders.
The second she emerged from the bathroom, a fresh scent of her lavender body wash trailing behind her, Shree made a beeline for her wardrobe. Yanking open the doors, she skimmed through her clothes at lightning speed. The sight of her neatly arranged outfits did little to comfort her chaotic mind.
"Blue wide-leg jeans… white shirt," she muttered, pulling out the first combination that caught her eye. She quickly threw on the outfit, buttoning up the crisp shirt and tucking it into her high-waisted jeans. The look was simple yet elegant, perfect for a first impression at a new college. She grabbed a bracelet, put on a light coat of lip balm, and stood back for a moment to survey herself in the mirror.
“Not bad, Shree,” she murmured approvingly, giving herself a quick nod before slipping into her white sneakers. She picked up her bag, slinging it over her shoulder, and practically flew to the kitchen.
Entering the kitchen, she realized she didn’t have time for a proper breakfast. Her stomach growled in protest, but there was no helping it now. With a resigned sigh, Shree grabbed two slices of bread and jammed them into the toaster, tapping her fingers impatiently on the counter. The toaster popped, and she winced—both slices were burnt.
“Of course,” she muttered sarcastically, smearing on some butter and strawberry jam anyway. The toast crunched noisily as she took quick bites, not even tasting it. Her gaze darted to the wall clock, panic building up again.
8:40 AM.
"No, no, no, no!" she muttered, grabbing her phone and shoving the rest of the burnt toast into her mouth. She grabbed her keys, her bag, and dashed out the door. The morning breeze greeted her with a sense of urgency, blowing through her hair as she ran down the narrow alley to the main road.
The streets were already bustling with activity. Shree maneuvered through the crowd, expertly dodging stray dogs, vegetable vendors setting up their stalls. She quickly flagged down a rickshaw.
