Kavya sat in her cabin, her hands shaking uncontrollably as she stared at the floor. The weight of the moment pressed heavily on her chest, making it difficult to breathe. She had just lost her first patient—a newborn, so fragile and innocent. It felt surreal, like a nightmare she couldn't wake from. The room around her was too quiet, too still, as if the world had come to a halt.

The door opened quietly, and Aarav stepped inside, immediately sensing the gravity of the situation. He had heard about the loss, and he knew this wasn’t just another tough day for Kavya. This was the first time she had lost a patient, and the pain was unbearable. He crossed the room silently and knelt beside her chair, his hand gently finding hers.

“Kavya,” he said softly, his voice a tender whisper.

She didn’t look at him, her eyes fixed on the floor, but her body trembled at the sound of his voice. “It was my first time,” she whispered, her voice shaky and broken. “I lost him, Aarav. I lost him…”

Her words cracked something deep inside him. He had never seen her like this before—so defeated, so fragile. His heart ached seeing her in this much pain. Without hesitation, Aarav wrapped his arms around her, pulling her close to his chest. She didn’t resist, collapsing into his embrace, the tears she had been holding back now spilling freely.

“I did everything I could,” she sobbed into his chest. “But it wasn’t enough. I couldn’t save him, Aarav. I wasn’t good enough…”

Aarav held her tighter, his hands running soothingly along her back. “You were more than good enough, Kavya. You did everything you could, and sometimes… that’s all we can do.”

“But it wasn’t enough,” she repeated, her voice breaking. “He was just a baby, Aarav. He didn’t even get a chance to live. How do I move on from this?”

He pulled back slightly, cupping her tear-streaked face in his hands, his eyes full of love and understanding. “This wasn’t your fault, Kavya. You gave that baby every chance you could. You fought for him, like you fight for all your patients. But sometimes, no matter how hard we fight, life is beyond our control.”

She shook her head, the guilt gnawing at her. "But it’s my job to save them".

Aarav’s gaze softened as he wiped a tear from her cheek. “Kavya, this is the hardest part of being a doctor, and it’s something no one can ever truly prepare for. But you are one of the most compassionate, skilled, and dedicated people I’ve ever known. This one moment doesn’t define you.”

She let out a shaky breath, her emotions swirling in a chaotic storm. “I’ve never felt this helpless before.”

“And it’s okay to feel that way,” Aarav said gently. “You don’t have to be strong all the time. You’re human, and this will hurt. But you’ll heal, and I’ll be here, every step of the way.”
