Piper's POV

I raised up my bat on instinct and turned around quickly, expecting to see a grotesque looking biter. I was caught by surprise to see- not a biter -but a gruff looking man with his crossbow raised at me.

"Drop yer' weapon." the archer ordered. His voice was deep and somewhat raspy. I slowly lowered my bat to the dusty ground. I looked up at him and he nodded towards my gun and knife. "Those too." I nodded and pulled my gun out of its holder, dropping it to the ground. I did the same with my knife as my hands shook.

This man could end my life. I needed to find a way to get away from him. I examined the man who stood in front of me with his crossbow still raised, ready to fire at me at any given moment. He had a stern expression on his face as though he was waiting for me to speak.

"I'm no harm, okay? Just let me grab my weapons and be on my way." I finally choked out. The rustic man edged closer to me, crossbow still raised.

"Are ya' bit?" he asked, nodding towards my thigh.

"No. I fell down that hill over there," I said pointing towards the hill behind him, "and I landed on a tree branch. It pierced straight through my thigh." I winced and shifted my weight to my good leg. He looked at the hill and then back at me.

"Where's yer' camp at?" he demanded, inching slightly closer to me. This guy was intimidating me, and he knew it.

"I don't have one. I've been on the road, alone." I told him half-truthfully. I wasn't completely alone the whole time. I had Hunter, but this guy doesn't need to know about it. I was about to ask him another question when he hit me over the head with the butt of his crossbow and I blacked out.
