“Get away from me!” Kurt snapped. “I don’t want to talk to you, Krist. I don’t know how many times I have to tell you that. I don’t want to talk to you or be around you.”
“Oh, you know that isn’t true.” Krist snorted. “You want to be around me all the time until I point out reality. Then you abandon me and come back into my arms.”
“That isn’t true.” Kurt growled. “I do not do that! I haven’t done that once.”
“Whenever you and that sad excuse of a wife you fight, you come to me in my house crying and I hold you and comfort you. You even sleep in the same bed as me.” Krist pointed out. “I then tell you to leave Courtney because she hates you and you throw a tantrum and ignore me even if that’s true.”
“it’s not that easy…” Kurt said. For a few seconds, he looked as if he was calming down. But he started screaming once more. “You don’t know anything about my relationship! You need to stop assuming stuff and mind your own damn business.”
“It is my business, Kurt.”
“How?” Kurt demanded. “Please enlighten me about how my personal life is your business at all.”
“Because you are my best friend and l-“ Krist trailed off, noticing that Dave was there. “You know what we are, Kurt. I don’t have to say it. Or at least what we were. I don’t even know what we are anymore.”
Kurt hesitated before shrugging. “I don’t know either.”
Dave was just in the background, standing there as his two bandmates argued. He was standing like a deer in headlights. He figured that if he moved a single inch, they would notice he was there and turn on him. That’s what they do anyway.
At the start of the band, everything was going well. Dave, Kurt and Krist all got along, and they truly cared about each other. They still care about each other. It’s just different now.
Kurt heavily got into heroin and other hard drugs, along with getting with a person who only enabled his bad traits and made him worse. Not better.
Kurt isn’t the person that he used to be, and everybody has noticed that. Even the media. But especially Krist.
Now Dave doesn’t know the true extent of Krist and Kurt’s relationship. They keep it a deep secret that nobody will find out. But he knows that they are at least more than friends.
Seeing Kurt like this hurts Krist beyond belief and it’s causing him to lash out. They both are lashing out.
Dave figured that he shouldn’t say anything but at the same time he couldn’t stand here in silence. He had to speak. Even if he was terrified.
“W-What’s wrong guys?” Dave asked awkwardly.
As soon as Dave spoke, both Kurt and Krist turned to him. Instead of screaming at each other, they are just going to build their rage up and release it all at him.
“What are you doing here?” Kurt demanded. “This conversation doesn’t include you at all.”
“Do you really think everything is okay?” Krist asked. “Nothing has been okay for the past month. Everything is wrong and it won’t ever be right.”
“Y-You don’t know that…” Dave started. He had a feeling that his words were just going to enrage the two more. “Things could improve.”
“They aren’t.” Kurt said bluntly. “None of you two know me. You are just my bandmates. Nothing more. I don’t want to get better.”
Hurt flashed in Krist’s eyes. “You don’t mean that.”
“But I do.” Kurt said. “I love heroin. Not you.”
Tears dripped down Krist’s face. He was lost and Dave reached out, putting his hand on his shoulder.
“Everything’s okay.” Dave whispered softly. “He doesn’t really mean that. He’s just upset right now.”
“Leave me alone and don’t touch me!” Krist snapped. He grabbed Dave’s hand and twisted it. He kept twisting and twisting. Dave let out a short screech. Krist is extremely strong and tall but he rarely ever resorts to violence.
Tears swelled in Krist’s face. He wasn’t sure what hurt more. The fact that he was in pain or the fact that one of his best friends was doing this to him.
“P-Please stop… I-I’m sorry… I'm sorry, Krist….”
Only when Dave started to plead like a pathetic child did Krist let go of his hand. Dave grabbed his hand with his other, whimpering. Nothing was broken but it was going to be sore for a while.
“Get out.”
Was all that Krist said.
Dave didn’t have to be told twice. He turned around and left. He wanted to stop crying. He didn’t want to throw a tantrum like a baby. But, at the same time, he just couldn’t stop the tears from coming out of his eyes. He was so upset, and he didn’t know where to go.
In the end, Dave led himself into Pat’s room. He ripped the door open, and Pat was sitting on his bed. Pat tilted his head.
“What’s wrong, Dave?” he asked gently.
Whenever things get rough with Kurt and Krist, Dave always goes to Pat. He is there for him and comforts him when nobody else does.
“H-He hurt me….”
Was all Dave could say. He knew that he wasn’t giving enough information, but it was hard for him to speak due to how much he was crying.
“Come here.” Pat ordered. “Sit down next to me and let me comfort you.”
Dave instantly did that. He leaned on Pat’s shoulders. He was huffing and puffing as he tried to control himself. Pat’s response was to wrap his arms around Dave and nuzzle him.
“Everything is okay Dave… You don’t have to worry.” Pat whispered. “Just tell me what’s happening. Everything is okay and you don’t have to worry. You are safe. Who hurt you.”
“K-Krist?”
“Krist?” Surprise blinked in Pat’s eyes.
“He didn’t really hurt me.” Dave sighed, feeling like a wussy. “He just twisted my hand.”
“That’s still hurting you.” Pat pointed out. He reached forward to grab Dave’s hand, but Dave flinched.
“Shh….” He said gently. “Don’t worry. I’m not going to hurt you. Alright?”
“Alright…” Dave said, finally starting to calm down. He then gave Pat his hand. “Just be gentle.”
Pat carefully looked over Dave’s hand before putting it down.
“Your hand isn’t hurt that bad.” He told him. “Just be careful with it. Got it?”
“Got it…”
“So, what happened?” Pat asked.
“I-I came across Kurt and Krist fighting again, and I tried to calm them down, but it just made everything worse, and they lashed out at me. D-Did I do something wrong?” Dave asked as tears dripped from his face.
“No, No.” Pat said gently. “You didn’t do anything wrong. Don’t worry, Dave. Kurt and Krist are just stressed right now.”
“I know they’re stressed. But do they really have to take their anger out on me?” Dave whimpered.
“They shouldn’t be doing that to you.” Pat sighed. “I’ll have a talk with them.”
“Don’t.” Dave said quickly. “Please don’t. It’s just going to make everything worse.”
Pat looked like he was going to argue but in the end he nodded. “I won’t. But please stay away from them.”
“T-This hurts… I thought they were my friends.”
“I know. Just calm down and spend time with me instead of them. Come here, Dave.” Pat ordered, opening his arms.
Dave eagerly curled up into Pat’s arms, snuggling into him. He knew that most people would find It weird that he was getting held like a child. But he didn’t care. He needed this right now. Pat started to gently cradle him.
As Pat cradled Dave in his arms, Dave couldn’t help but feel a relief pulse throughout him. Dave looked up to Pat Smear and a part of him was starting to view him as a father figure.
