As Adi dropped Nithya off at the office, his mind kept circling back to the morning. He didn't realize it then, but something felt off with Tara. The way she avoided him, the way she left without having breakfast-it gnawed at him. He was used to Tara's quiet nature, but today it seemed different.
Driving back, his thoughts drifted to the past few days, replaying moments in his head. The way Tara smiled at the little girl in the bakery, the care she showed him when he was injured, and the subtle changes in their interactions after their marriage. He wasn't sure what was changing between them, but something definitely was.
Suddenly, Nithya's voice from this morning echoed in his mind, "I'll be staying here for a few days... it'll be like old times, right?" For the first time, Adi felt uncomfortable. Tara's face flashed in his mind, and the unease he felt about Nithya's presence deepened. What was it? Was it because Tara didn't seem happy? Or was it something else altogether?
Tara's face kept flashing in his mind-her quiet smile, the way her eyes lit up when she was happy, the soft way she spoke when she was trying to understand him. And then, the way she looked this morning. Distant. Hurt.
"Was she trying to tell me something important? Or was I just too caught up in everything else to notice?" Adi felt a pang of guilt. He didn't even know if she had eaten today, didn't ask her how her day was. In fact, he couldn't remember the last time they had a real conversation.
His phone buzzed, and Nithya's name flashed across the screen. He frowned, feeling a sense of irritation that he didn't quite understand. Ignoring the call, he tossed the phone onto the passenger seat and focused on the road. But his mind refused to let go of the morning's events.
Adi stepped out of the car, his fingers tightening on the steering wheel for a second before letting go. Usually, when he entered the police station, he did so with a firm stride, shoulders straight, his mind already racing with the day's work. But today... today was different. His steps lacking their usual confidence, weighed down by guilt. His mind was in turmoil, replaying the events of the morning, Tara's sad face flashing before his eyes. He didn't realize how deeply he had hurt her until now. His usual brisk walk had become sluggish, and his usually alert demeanor was dull.
He felt lost.
As Adi settled into his chair, Vicky, his colleague, approached him.
Vicky: (curious) "Adi, everything okay? You seem off today."
Adi forced a smile, brushing it off.
Adi: (distracted) "I'm fine. Just some things on my mind."
But Vicky wasn't convinced. He had known Adi long enough to recognize when something was really bothering him. However, he decided not to push further and left him alone.
From the corner of the room, Kishore, Tara's father, watched Adi closely. Adi's usual firm grip and composed demeanor were missing today. Something was wrong-he could sense it. Kishore was a veteran in the force and had seen enough to read body language like a book. He wasn't in uniform today, his day assigned to undercover work, but that didn't stop him from observing his son-in-law.
Adi walked with a heaviness in his step, and it wasn't the physical tiredness that weighed him down. It was deeper-emotional, like a storm brewing inside. Kishore wanted to talk to him, ask him what was going on, but he had his own duties to attend to. He made a mental note to check on Adi later, when they had some privacy.
At his desk, Adi opened the file in front of him, but the words blurred together. His mind was anywhere but here. All he could think about was Tara, her face when she rushed out of the house this morning, the way she tried to speak to him, and how he just let the moment slip away.
