My heart skipped a beat at her words

My heart skipped a beat at her words. "You look exactly like Avantika."

My mother.

I froze, unable to process how this stranger could possibly know about her. A thousand questions rushed through my mind, each colliding with the other, leaving me momentarily speechless. Who was this woman? How did she know my mother? And why now?

The woman, dressed in a simple but elegant sari, stepped forward, her eyes scanning my face with an intensity that made me squirm. Her gaze held something familiar-nostalgia mixed with pain.

"How... how do you know my mother?" I managed to ask, my voice trembling despite my attempt to sound composed.

She gave me a faint, bittersweet smile, her hands clasped tightly in front of her. "I knew Avantika very well. She was... dear to me, like a sister."

My chest tightened. Sister? What was she talking about? My mother never mentioned anyone like her.

"Who are you?" I asked, my tone sharper than intended, but I couldn't help it. The mention of my mother's name always unearthed a torrent of emotions-love, longing, and the gnawing ache of abandonment.

"I'm Sarita," she said, her voice soft yet steady. "I was Avantika's closest friend. There's so much you don't know, Avni. About her. About you."

Her words hung in the air, heavy and unsettling. The room suddenly felt too small, the walls closing in on me as questions bubbled to the surface.

I swallowed hard, keeping my gaze locked on her. "What do you mean by that? What don't I know?"

Savitri sighed, her eyes filling with unshed tears. "I don't want to overwhelm you, child, but the truth about your mother's past... and yours... is far more complicated than you've been told. I came to give you answers, answers you deserve. But only if you're ready to hear them."

My hands clenched the edges of my desk. I wasn't sure if I was ready, but something deep inside me-an unrelenting need to know-propelled me forward.

"I've been ready my whole life," I whispered, my voice firm despite the storm brewing inside me. "Tell me everything."

An hour later:

"Avantika was my best friend," she began, gripping the coffee cup tightly in her palm. My heartbeat quickened. I was curious to learn about my mother's past, but a wave of nervousness enveloped me.

"Avantika and I were always together. From school to college, we even joined Malhotra and Co. at the same time as interns. We were inseparable, more like sisters than best friends." A small smile appeared on her face as she reminisced, and I smiled too, glad to be learning about a part of my mother's life I'd never known.
