I plopped down on Ishika’s couch with a heavy sigh, pulling my knees up to my chest as I watched her move around the living room, picking up tiny toys scattered everywhere.
Yeah, welcome to motherhood.
Her house smelled like warm vanilla and baby powder, a comforting mix that felt like home. Little Shamika, their three-year-old whirlwind of joy, was napping peacefully in her cradle, giving Ishika a rare moment of peace.
I found myself staring at Shamika’s tiny fists curled up near her cheeks, her soft breath making the lightest sounds.
She looked so much like Samarth Bhaiya—his strong features softened into something delicate and pure.
Looking at her, you couldn’t help but believe in miracles. She was proof of everything Ishika and Samarth bhaiya had fought for and won.
If I stared too long, I might catch baby fever again. But no. Adi and Ani were enough little chaos to keep me busy for the next lifetime.
Still, a smile tugged at my lips—until it faltered.
I glanced toward the kitchen where Samarth Bhaiya was helping Ishika stack dishes, stealing kisses whenever he thought no one was looking.
The way he cared for her, so openly, so effortlessly... It reminded me of the way Avivansh used to look at me during my pregnancies—like I was the center of his universe.
Used to.
I swallowed around the sudden lump in my throat.
I should have been happy. I should have been grateful. I had two beautiful boys, a loving husband, a life most would envy.
Instead, there was this dull ache inside my chest I couldn’t shake off.
“What’s with the long face, birthday girl?” Ishika teased, finally settling down beside me with a bowl of cut fruits balanced on her baby bump. She was glowing, pregnant again, and somehow even more beautiful than before.
I gave her a small smile, but it didn’t reach my eyes. “I’m being stupid, honestly. It’s nothing.”
Ishika raised an eyebrow, popping a grape into her mouth. “If it were nothing, you wouldn’t look like you’re about to cry any minute. Spill it.”
I exhaled, pressing my forehead against my knees for a second before admitting, “It’s Avi. And... today.”
Her brows knitted in confusion. “What about today?”
