FOURTH

I finally got home, the weight of the day pressing down on me like a heavy blanket. As I stepped inside, the familiar smell of my mum’s cooking filled the air, but it didn’t bring the usual comfort. There she was, sitting at the table, her eyes lighting up as soon as she saw me.

“Hey, where have you been? I’ve been waiting for you,” she said, her voice laced with worry.

I forced a small smile, though it didn’t reach my eyes. “Mom, I’m sorry. I’ll eat later. You should go ahead without me,” I replied, the sadness in my voice impossible to hide.

Her expression faltered, the hope dimming in her eyes as she nodded. “Alright, dear... but you should take care of yourself,” she said softly, picking up her fork with less enthusiasm than before.

I gave her a quick nod before heading to my room, the exhaustion creeping into my bones. As soon as I entered, I collapsed onto my bed, sinking into the mattress. The thought of studying crossed my mind, but it felt so distant, like something I was supposed to care about but couldn’t muster the energy for. I closed my eyes, hoping for just a moment of peace.

Suddenly, the sound of a familiar voice made my eyes snap open.

“Hey, Fourth.”

I blinked in surprise. Standing in the doorway was Gemini, looking completely out of place in my house.

“Gemini?” I asked, sitting up abruptly. “What are you doing here?”

He frowned, his lips pulling into a small pout. “I don’t like it when you call me ‘Gem,’” he muttered, his tone carrying that playful annoyance I’d seen a hundred times before.

I couldn’t help the smile that tugged at my lips. “Okay, okay. Gemini. But seriously, what do you want?”

Gemini crossed the room and plopped down beside me, his expression more serious now. “I think you took my book,” he said, crossing his arms as if I was guilty of some crime.

I raised an eyebrow, confused. “What? No, I didn’t. Why would I take your book?”

“Check,” he insisted, his eyes narrowing slightly.

I let out a sigh, still certain I hadn’t taken anything. “Gemini, I didn’t take your book. I would remember,” I said as I got up and walked to my bag, rummaging through it. I turned back to him, ready to prove my innocence. “See? Nothing here—”

But before I could finish, I felt him behind me, his presence suddenly overwhelming. He was close, so close I could practically feel the warmth radiating off him.

My breath caught in my throat as I turned to face him. His face was inches from mine, his eyes dark and intense, something unreadable flickering behind them.

“Stop following me. Or... stop coming to my house otherwise I'm gonna kill you,” he said in a low, husky whisper, his breath warm against my skin. “You know I don’t like you.”

His words hit like a punch to the gut, but the proximity between us made it hard to process. My back was pressed against the edge of the desk, nowhere to go, and his presence was suffocating, confusing. I swallowed hard, trying to find my voice.

“Out of the blue, you say this? What are you talking about?” My voice came out shaky, and I hated how nervous I sounded. He was too close.

My heart raced, and I wasn’t sure if it was from his sudden hostility or something else entirely.

Suddenly, my mom called from downstairs, her voice cutting through the thick air of confusion Gemini had left behind.

“Fourth! Your father’s on the phone!” she shouted, her tone bright, like she’d been waiting for this moment all day.
