Chapter 64: Mutation
"Great, let's head to the gathering point," Xie Hongquan said, glancing at Su Su with a smile he couldn't hide.
"Okay," Su Su nodded.
Before leaving, she cast a deep look in the direction of Li Jingyi and Zhang Qianrong.
Seeing her look their way, Zhang Qianrong quickly pulled Li Jingyi to hide by the wall.
After a while, he peeked out and saw Su Su walking away with the two men.
"What now?" Li Jingyi anxiously shook his hand.
She couldn't believe Su Su would do such a thing, following other men for a few points. And two men at that—could she handle it?
Zhang Qianrong frowned, clearly thinking something unsavory.
"Let's follow them and see."
Zhang Qianrong and Li Jingyi quietly followed Su Su and the two men, almost getting caught several times.
When they reached the hunting gathering point, Zhang Qianrong realized Su Su planned to go hunting today.
This was their chance!
Overjoyed, Zhang Qianrong and Li Jingyi slipped into the crowd.
As soon as Wu Liangcai and Xie Hongquan arrived with Su Su, their teammates from Building D surrounded them.
"Boss, you're finally here! We were so worried something happened to you."
Su Su smiled and greeted everyone.
On the way, Wu Liangcai had told her that hunting was very dangerous, usually done by men. Most women stayed in the base, doing simple tasks to earn points.
However, some skilled women also chose to hunt.
Indeed, Su Su saw quite a few women at the gathering point.
Curious, she asked, "Did you all plan to hunt together today?"
"Yes, we went out yesterday too, but didn't catch much. We helped carry wild boars for the base and earned a few points."
"Do you all live together in the base?" Su Su asked.
"No, but we live close to each other for mutual support," Wu Liangcai replied.
"Boss, do you have a place to stay? Want to live near us?" someone asked.
Su Su shook her head, "I found a place in the south."
"That's not cheap," someone gasped.
Everyone looked at her with admiration and envy.
No wonder she was the boss, renting such a nice place.
Since entering the base, they had learned about the housing prices from agents.
Before the disaster, they all had decent incomes. While they couldn't afford top luxury homes, they could buy ordinary houses in decent areas.
But now, their paper money was useless, and even a one-bedroom apartment in the base was out of reach.
They were really poor!
If they knew Su Su had bought her place instead of renting, they would be shocked.
"It's expensive, so I'm here to earn points."
The house cost 2,300 points, plus 58 points at the supermarket. She didn't have many points left.
Of course, she had enough supplies in her space and wouldn't go hungry without points.
Her main goal today was to give those two a chance to rob her.
"With you leading, we'll surely have a great haul," Xie Wen said.
"Boss, I'll be your assistant. Just give me a little reward," Wu Liangcai quickly added.
"Hey, Wu Liangcai, you stole my job!"
The two bantered, making everyone laugh.
Just then, three minibuses, a truck, and a bulldozer arrived.
The bulldozer led, clearing snow from the road for the vehicles behind.
The second vehicle was a bus, already full of people in uniform green coats, looking serious and stern.
These were the soldiers sent by the base to gather supplies.
The person in the second vehicle's passenger seat opened the window and used a loudspeaker.
"Attention everyone, there are only two vehicles today. Please queue up orderly. Anyone causing trouble will be expelled from the base!"
"Also, the base only provides transportation. Your safety is your responsibility. Those still willing to go, please queue up. Those not willing, please leave."
As soon as the announcement ended, about a dozen police officers on motorcycles appeared.
Under their direction, everyone quickly formed a neat line and boarded the vehicles.
Su Su boarded and sat down, seeing Zhang Qianrong and Li Jingyi board another vehicle.
The vehicles soon filled up, leaving the remaining people to watch as the doors closed and the vehicles left the base.
After an hour of bumpy travel, they arrived at the foot of a snowy mountain.
"This isn't the same place as yesterday," Wu Liangcai noted, looking out the window.
People were getting off the vehicle, and Xie Hongquan said, "Of course not. They caught a lot yesterday, so they need a new place today."
"Just remember to stay safe. Many didn't return yesterday," Mei Zhifeng warned.
A nearby person, hearing this, curiously asked, "Why didn't many return yesterday?"
It was his first time going out with the base's vehicle.
Mei Zhifeng gave him a meaningful look, "Do you think the prey will just lie there for you to catch?"
Since the disasters began, many domestic animals had died or escaped, with some lucky ones reaching the mountains.
In this extreme cold, domestic animals shouldn't survive.
But yesterday, he saw the soldiers bring back mutated wild boars, covered in fur and with tusks.
Let me know if you need anything else!
