"Seerat, wait." I heard his voice as I stepped out of the room, I closed my eyes, please...please, God.
I didn't turn around, anticipating a thousand different things he could say in those ten seconds until he was standing in front of me.
I gulped, waiting for him to say something, "Don't leave." He said, my heartbeats rising with his words, "Let's... let's not rush it...the...the contract isn't over yet and-"
"But it will be over soon, no?" I asked, "You got your inheritance, Neel is not in your way anymore, you don't have to be married in a...in a contract marriage anymore." I stated, tell me I'm wrong, tell me it isn't just a contract anymore.
"You can't leave." He shook his head.
"What should I stay for?" I asked, "Why should I stay?"
"It's not over yet." He replied, his voice restrained.
"But it will be." I replied, "A month later or now, it will be the same, no? You'll ask me to leave one month later, I'm leaving on my own now, you wouldn't have to go through a month-long torture."
"You want me to say I love you? You'll stay then?" He asked. And suddenly, I didn't want to hear those words from his mouth ever again. I didn't reply, I didn't know what to reply.
"I...I.."
"Aapse to jhoot bhi nahi bola jaa raha." I sighed.
"What do you want from me?" He asked, frustration clear on his face, "Why can't you stay?"
"Because it's suffocating me, this...this whole facade, this whole sham of a marriage that we have, it's gripping at my throat every passing second!" I exclaimed, "aur yaad hai aapne kaha tha chali jao? To mai na jaa rahi hoon, ho gaya mujhe p-pyaar, sacha wala, to mai jaa rahi hoon, humesha ke liye." I blinked away my tears, laughing to stop myself from crying, "Aap mujhe jyada Miss mat karna aur na...apni-apni dusri shadi me bhi bulana mujhe, mai apki new wife ko warn kar dungi, mere jaise kabhi na behave kare warna aap usko bhi door bhej doge, cha ab mai jaa rahi hoon, wo bahar wait kar raha hai mera, aur na...kuch nahi..." i love you
("And remember when you told me to leave? So, I'm going now. I've fallen in l-love, the real kind, so I'm leaving, forever. Don't miss me too much, okay? And...invite me to your next wedding too. I'll warn your new wife not to behave like me, or else you'll send her away too. Anyway, I'm going now. He's waiting for me outside. And...nothing else...)
"Who is he?" He asked. I closed my eyes, feeling sorrow for my feelings, that's what he wanted to know. That's how little he knows me.
I thought it was his job to catch lies.
I thought he knew better to read people.
I guess I was wrong.
How could that be the only thing he cared about? After everything... this was what mattered to him.
