FAYE
Dandao, Yoko’s mom, holds out her hand as though asking for a handshake.
How unusual.
She didn’t have time to finish her wai and shake the woman’s hand instead.
“Uh —.” Faye scans the room, looking for a decent area for them to sit. She nervously gestures at the small couch.
That should do.
“Please take a seat, ma’am.”
“Oh, please.” Mrs. Dao removes her jacket before coming in. “You can call me Dao.”
Faye caught a citrus scent in the air as the woman passed through. Despite the sweet scent, it didn’t help Faye’s galloping heart.
“I’ll uh try Miss — Dao, I mean.”
Faye looks down while the woman makes her way straight to the couch.
Of all the times she thought of meeting Yoko’s mom, being in a hospital, dressed in a hospital gown with a swollen face, is out of the picture.
Not that she thought of this meeting that much.
When she didn’t sit yet, Dao pats the space beside her. “Have a seat. Don’t worry, I’m not planning to stay for long.”
It should be reassuring, but between the two of them, it was Yoko’s mom who had every right to stay in the room.
From what she learned from Mr. Bunmi, it is the Lertpraserts who’s paying for her bills.
Perhaps that’s why she’s here?
“Ma’am — Dao,” Faye mutters as soon as she sits. “I’ll pay for my stay. I will --.”
Mrs. Dao interrupts her with a gentle touch on her hand. “First, paying for your bills here is the least we can do for someone who looks after and saved my daughter. And I don’t even care if the kidnapper is your cousin.”
Just the mention of Third makes her gulp.
“I came here to thank you personally.”
“There’s no need, miss. I’m only doing my job.”
“Well, that’s what I don’t understand, though. Big informed me that you were fired before any of this happened. So —.”
There’s a question that hangs in the air, and Faye doesn’t want to hear the rest of it.
“Do you like my daughter, Faye?”
Faye couldn’t bring herself to meet the woman’s eyes.
“I’m, uh —.”
“I’m sorry,” Mrs. Dao said with a little chuckle. “It’s really none of my business.”
When the woman stands, Faye can’t help but follow her on the way to the door.
“You should take some rest now. I’ll see you once you get better? That is, if you still want to be my daughter’s bodyguard.”
Faye nods without skipping a beat.
The woman's smile reminds her of Yoko.
“Good night, Mrs. Dao.”
YOKO
As soon as she got discharged from the hospital, they had a family dinner at Big’s restaurant.
It’s only been two weeks since her kidnapping, but she’s too anxious to get back to work.
