Mairwen stood in the bustling hallway of her school, her heart racing with anticipation as she glanced at her phone. It was time to call her mom, Ariah, who was recovering in the hospital after a long shift at the clinic. Taking a deep breath, she pressed the dial button, eager to share her news.
The phone rang a couple of times before Ariah picked up, her voice warm yet slightly tired. “Hello?”
“Mom! It’s me!” Mairwen exclaimed, unable to contain her excitement. “I have the best news ever!”
“Mairwen! What is it? You sound so excited!” Ariah responded, her tone lifting despite her fatigue.
“I’m the top student in my class! I got the highest score on our exams!” Mairwen shouted, her words tumbling out in a rush.
There was a moment of silence on the other end before Ariah’s joyful laughter erupted. “Oh my goodness! That’s incredible, Mairwen! I’m so proud of you! You’ve worked so hard for this!”
“I was so nervous when they announced the scores,” Mairwen admitted, her voice still bubbling with enthusiasm. “I thought I might have messed up, but then they called my name! I couldn’t believe it!”
“See? All your hard work paid off!” Ariah said, a sense of pride washing over her. “How did your classmates react?”
“They were really supportive,” Mairwen replied, her smile audible in her voice. “Even some of the ones who usually compete with me came up to congratulate me. It was so nice!”
“I wish I could be there to celebrate with you,” Ariah said, her tone softening. “But I’m cheering you on from here. You deserve this moment!”
“I’ll come visit you after school!” Mairwen promised. “We’ll celebrate together. Maybe I can bring your favorite snacks from the cafeteria?”
“That sounds perfect! I can’t wait,” Ariah said, feeling her spirits lift with each word. “You’ve made my day so much better, sweetheart.”
“Thanks, Mom. I just wanted to make you proud,” Mairwen said, her voice sincere. “You’ve always been my inspiration.”
As a doctor, Ariah had faced countless challenges, but hearing her daughter’s happiness filled her with renewed strength. “You’re my inspiration too, Mairwen. I’m so proud of you, and I love you so much.”
“I love you too, Mom! See you soon!” Mairwen said, her excitement bubbling over once more.
As they hung up, Ariah couldn’t help but smile. Despite the long hours and the exhaustion of her job, Mairwen’s achievement brought a sense of joy and hope that brightened her day. She knew that together, they would navigate whatever came next, and that was the best medicine of all.
It was a busy afternoon at Mac's office, the usual hustle and bustle of running a company keeping her occupied. Papers were spread across her desk, and she was deep in a conversation with a colleague when her phone rang. Glancing at the screen, she saw "Iyah" flashing, and a small smile crept across her face. No matter how busy things got, her daughter’s calls were always a welcome break.
Mac excused herself from the meeting and answered the call. "Hey, my baby! What’s up?"
On the other end, Iyah’s excited voice chirped through the phone. "Mama Mac! Are you coming home soon?"
Mac leaned back in her chair, softening instantly at the sound of her daughter’s voice. "Not just yet, love. Mama’s still got a few things to finish here at work. Why, do you need something?"
"Well…" Iyah’s voice trailed off for a moment, as if she was gathering the courage to ask. "I was thinking… can we get ice cream later when you come home? Pleeease?"
Mac chuckled softly, picturing her daughter’s hopeful face. "Ice cream, huh? Let me guess, chocolate with sprinkles?"
"Yes! And maybe with a cherry on top!" Iyah added, her voice full of excitement.
Mac smiled, leaning forward in her chair as if it brought her closer to her daughter. "Alright, alright. If I finish up early, we’ll stop by and get ice cream on my way home. But you have to promise me you’ve been good all day, okay?"
"I’ve been super good, Mama!" Iyah exclaimed, her tone completely serious. "I even helped Mairwen with her homework."
Mac raised an eyebrow, her grin widening. "Is that so? Helping your big sister? Well, that sounds like you definitely deserve some ice cream then."
"Yay! Thanks, Mama! I love you!" Iyah’s happiness was contagious, and Mac could feel her own stress from the day melting away.
"I love you too, princess. I’ll see you soon," Mac replied, her voice gentle as she hung up the phone, feeling a sense of warmth wash over her.
As she returned to her desk, the thought of the busy workday didn’t seem as overwhelming anymore. The promise of ice cream with Iyah later was all the motivation she needed to get through the rest of the day.
