Selah approached her mom, Loyden, who was in the kitchen preparing dinner. “Mom, can I ask you something?”
Loyden looked up, wiping her hands on a towel. “Of course, honey. What is all about?”
Selah took a deep breath. “My friends, Crielle and Avoina, are having an overnight at Aviona’s house. Can I go?”
Loyden raised an eyebrow, considering it. “That sounds fun! But how well do you know Aviona’s parents? Have you talked to them about it?”
Selah nodded eagerly. “Yeah, they’re really nice! They said it’s okay if I come over.”
Loyden smiled, appreciating her daughter’s enthusiasm. “Alright, but I want you to promise me you’ll stay in touch and let me know if you need anything.”
“Promise!” Selah replied, her face lighting up. “Thanks, Mom! I’ll make sure to check in.”
“Have fun, but remember to be responsible,” Loyden added, feeling a mix of excitement and a little worry.
Selah hugged her mom tightly. “I will! I can’t wait!” As she dashed off to call her friends, Loyden watched her go, feeling proud of Selah’s growing independence.
Loyden sat at the kitchen table, her phone pressed to her ear as she dialed Charles. The sound of rain pounding against the window filled the room, a heavy rhythm that mirrored her thoughts.
“Hey, hon,” Charles answered, his voice slightly muffled. “I’m in the middle of a meeting. Is everything okay?”
Loyden glanced out at the downpour. “Just wanted to check in. The rain is really coming down out there. Are you safe?”
“Yeah, we’re inside, but I’m worried about the drive home,” Charles replied, her tone shifting. “Is Selah ready for her overnight?”
“She is! But I’m more concerned about the weather,” Loyden said, her voice laced with worry. “It’s really bad out. Are you sure you’ll be okay?”
“I’ll leave as soon as I can. If it gets too bad, I might stay here a bit longer,” Charles reassured her. “Just keep an eye on Selah, okay?”
“Will do. Just drive safely,” Loyden replied, her heart easing slightly. “We’ll be here waiting for you.”
“I Love you,” Charles said before the line went silent.
“ I Love you too,” Loyden whispered, looking out at the relentless rain, hoping for clear skies ahead.
Charles finally arrived home, shaking off the rain as he stepped inside. He found Loyden curled up on the couch in the living room, a blanket draped over her and a book in hand. The soft glow of a lamp lit the room, creating a cozy atmosphere despite the storm outside.
“Hey, hon are you here!” Loyden exclaimed, looking up with a smile that quickly turned to concern. “You’re soaked!”
Charles laughed softly, wiping her face. “Yeah, it was quite the drive. But I’m here now. How’s Selah?”
“She’s excited for her overnight. Aviona’s parents came to pick her up a little while ago,” Loyden replied, her expression softening. “I was worried about the weather, but it looks like they made it just in time.”
Charles settled next to her, pulling the blanket around them both. “Good. I’m glad she’s with friends.” She glanced out the window at the rain. “It’s really coming down.”
Loyden nodded, leaning her head against her wife shoulder. “I was just thinking about how cozy it feels in here compared to out there.”
“Exactly,” Charles said, wrapping an arm around her. “Let’s make the most of it. Do you want to watch something together?”
“Sounds perfect,” Loyden replied, a smile spreading across her face. As they settled in, the sound of the rain became a comforting backdrop to their evening together.
As they cuddled under the blanket, Charles looked down at Loyden with a playful grin. “So, now that we’re all cozy and the rain is pouring outside, do you think we’re ready for baby number two?”
Loyden raised an eyebrow, a smirk tugging at her lips. “Are you serious? You know how chaotic things can get with one!”
Charles chuckled, nudging her gently. “Just imagine all the fun! Plus, Selah would make a great big sister.”
“True, but think of the sleepless nights,” Loyden replied, trying to suppress a smile.
“Ah, come on! We survived that once. We could totally do it again,” she teased, leaning closer. “And besides, I’d take the night shifts.”
“Is that a promise?” Loyden asked, her eyes sparkling with mischief.
“Absolutely,” Charles said, pretending to be earnest. “I’ll even bring you coffee in bed.”
Loyden laughed, feeling warmth spread through her. “Alright, you’re winning me over. But let’s keep this conversation on the back burner for now. I want to enjoy this moment.”
“Fair enough,” Charles said, pulling her closer as they settled back into their cozy haven, the rain still drumming softly outside.
As they nestled together under the blanket, the warmth between them grew. Charles leaned in, her lips brushing softly against Loyden’s. She melted into the kiss, feeling safe and cherished.
Their embrace deepened, the world outside fading away as they shared a quiet moment just for themselves. Loyden smiled against her lips, pulling back slightly to meet her gaze. “I love moments like this.”
“Me too,” Charles replied, her eyes sparkling. “No matter how busy life gets, I always want this time with you.”
With a playful grin, she leaned in again, kissing her gently, savoring the intimacy. In that cozy living room, with the rain pouring outside, everything felt just right.
