A/N:

Had to pull up the wiki for this, but didn't really have much time to read much besides the roles and relied on what little I remember from that one time I got curious and read up on it because of the cool designs. Hope it's not too inaccurate! :D

Chara's HP is at rock bottom, down to single digits now. There's blood all over, and the damn lazybones has the gall to smile at them. They grit their teeth, frustrated beyond belief.

Why?!? Why do they keep losing?

They tried, and tried, and tried, but they can never seem to beat him! Just when they think they'll win, he always blindsides them with an unexpected attack! They're sick and tired of this!

Papyrus's voice sounds out, entirely too relaxed for the fight they're in, with a smokers husk (despite being a skeleton, just how???) and that tingly feeling of magic as an undertone to his mocking.

"So determined, huh, kid? And all for what? You know you'll lose, so why do you keep going?"

His grin stretches when Chara glances at him with a glare, amusement clear in his small eyelights.

"Just give up. You have nothing to gain out of winning."

He's right, Chara knows that. They've bet nothing on this, and whoever hears of their win will either assume they're lying or it's a fluke because Papyrus went easy on them. But still- their determination burns brighter with each defeat, the competitiveness They've always had rearing its head.

Even if no one else believes them, the two of them will know. And that's enough for them to try, the possibility of being able to lord it over his stupid skull.

"I'm not giving up!"

Their words hold a viciousness to them, just a little bite, and Chara's determination burns yet brighter. Papyrus only chuckles at them.

Their HP hits zero.

They let out a frustrated sound immediately, holding back the urge to throw their controller at the TV as 'wasted' gets written on the screen. Papyrus laughs beside them at the pout on their face, setting down his controller and stretching casually.

"Geez, kid, relax. It ain't that serious."

Chara shoots him a look, huffing and rolling their eyes but setting down their controller as well. It must've been what, two hours now? Their dad is preparing dinner over here, at the skeleton brothers' house, so it's the only reason they had so much time to play before being sternly told to turn the TV off. It's around time for their assigned daily no screen time, after all. Asgore says it's supposed to help with keeping their attention span longer and finding fun outside of screens, but Chara doesn't care all that much.

They suppose they don't mind it either, since Asgore tends to join them and find an activity to do together.

It's been about a year now since they went above ground. Maybe closer to two, actually? They're not sure. Time tends to not hold much meaning to them.

They've been in Asgore's care for the past two months, him being initially judged unfit to take care of them due to his mental instability. While Chara does care for him, perhaps even love the idea of him as their father, they really have to agree with that judgement. Add to that the struggle to get monsters some rights and the debate over if a monster should be allowed to adopt a human and vice versa, it took a while for things to be stable like this.
