-Oh my, a wild cursing Papyrus! (Like one word, but still)

Undyne resists the urge to fidget but can't help but avoid his gaze. It's unlike her, honestly, but she admits to herself with an internal wince that she does not want to meet Papyrus's heartbroken gaze.

"I..."

She nearly cringes at the way his voice sounds, all pained and in disbelief, so soft it's difficult to imagine his usual confident persona. Guilt stabs at her SOUL.

"Do You... Really Mean That?"

She actually winces outwardly at that. If she had it her way, Papyrus would have never known she wasn't all that keen on allowing him into the guard.

Don't get her wrong! Papyrus is a powerful monster, he's just... too soft and trustful. Great qualities for a friend, perfect for a mascot (though, that does mean he needs guards with him, but Undyne trusts his judgement well enough to know when he actually needs them), but a royal guard?

Not a chance. Sentry was the only position she could give him underground that was relatively safe, as much as a job that required fighting could be, but on the surface? There's no need for sentries now, not when she could literally just step into a main street and see dozens, if not hundreds of humans.

"Nghhh- I'm sorry, Papyrus- I swear I was gonna tell ya, but I saw your eyes light up every time I brought up the guard and I just- I couldn't."

Shut up, shut up, shut up, what the hell are those cowardly excuses she's using?!?

(She can't help herself.)

"Besides, don't you like being the monsters's mascot? You get to spend all that time with the huma- with Frisk, and people adore you!" (SHUT UP) "isn't that what-"

She finally manages to cut off her own words when she takes a look at Papyrus's expression, mouth automatically clamping shut. He looks miserable. Guilt hits her like a tidal wave.

She wilts slightly.

"... I'm sorry."

What is with her today?

Papyrus is silent for a bit, long enough Undyne thinks she finally hit the threshold for the sweet monster to actually cut ties with her, but he straightens up, a hard look on his face she rarely sees.

He crosses his arms, legs spread shoulder length, and starts talking in his normal voice, albeit with a bit of fury in it.

"DAMN RIGHT YOU SHOULD BE SORRY!"

Undyne gaps at him.

Okay, um... that's unexpected. Not that she doesn't deserve it, but wow.

Papyrus points an accusing finger at her.

"HOW COULD YOU TRY AND EXCUSE YOUR BEHAVIOUR?!? THE UNDYNE I KNOW IS NOT SO COWARDLY SHE COULDN'T FACE HER OWN FAULTS!"

He cocks his hip, a harrumph leaving him as he stomps the ground harshly and closes his eyesockets. Undyne is... well, she's dumbfounded, to say the least.

But really, should she have expected anything less from him?

"I DO NOT FORGIVE YOU! BUT..."

He peeks one eyesocket open, frown twitching upwards into a smile as he poses confidently, chin tilted upwards with one hand on his hip and the other on his chest.

"I SUPPOSE I COULD GIVE YOU ANOTHER CHANCE!" Undyne very nearly wilts in relief, fondness in her SOUL. "DO NOT BE MISTAKEN!"

She straightens right back up, a confused but determined and apologetic look on her face.

"I AM VERY UPSET! BUT THE GREAT PAPYRUS IS UNDERSTANDING! IT CAN BE QUIET HARD TO SAY NO TO SUCH A HANDSOME SKULL."

He has his eyes closed again, expression switching to a smug grin, the hand on his chest now on his chin.

Undyne snorts, shoulders shaking as she tries to push down her laughter, a small amused grin on her face. Her grin switches to a smirk, posture straightening as she fist pumps the air.

"NGAHHHHH! You're right! This is so not like me! Sorry, paps!"

She beams at the skeleton, Papyrus immediately perking up and mirroring her energy. She brings down her hand from the air, one hand on her hip and the other pointing at her SOUL with her thumb.

"I'll make it up to you, promise! Don't wanna waste the chance the coolest monster gave me, now do I?!?"

Papyrus beams at her.

He really is the coolest friend she has.

(His SOUL throbs at the betrayal, even if he sort of already knew he'd never make it in. It still hurts. He understands why, but it still hurts.

He hates it. But... he doesn't hate Undyne. He couldn't! She's his best friend, after all.

So Papyrus will continue on. This isn't nearly enough to break someone as great as him!)
