Steps echo behind him. They're familiar ones, but they carry an odd heaviness to them, a finality they never had before.
Asgore... isn't sure how to feel. His shoulders shake minutely before he takes a deep breath, steeling himself. He turns around. His royal judge stands in the hallway, in his element, but he feels off. This is not the place for Asgore's stance. But...
... It is not the place for Sans either, not anymore.
He smiles.
"It's a wonderful day today, is it not? Birds are singing. The flowers are blooming wonderfully."
Sans hand and smile twitches, but Asgore can't see his eyes from the shadow of his hood.
Asgore takes another deep breath, doing his best to diligently ignore the dust on the skeleton monster's jacket, the distinctive tinted feel to his magic from the LV he's gained.
"Sans."
The skeleton tilts his skull to the side after a few seconds of silence. Asgore's smile strains, a shaky thing, but his voice is steady, inquiring.
"You always have a plan, do you not?"
Asgore waits patiently for any type of response from the skeleton and is eventually rewarded.
"... Yeah."

Asgore, traitorously, feels a bit relieved. He drops his gaze to the ground, will steeling itself as he pools his magic into his hand, the power buzzing anxiously in anticipation.
"It is not one I would be happy with, is it."
It is a statement, not a question, because Asgore knows his judge far too well. Sans does not answer him verbally, but the way his magic flares up is very telling. Asgore allows his shoulders to drop, a sad smile on his face as he regards him.
"... Very well."
Asgore does not face him as his friend. Asgore cannot. But the king of monsterkind, their protector, is not the coward Asgore is.
