Victoria was late to meet her friends during recess. The crisp autumn air nipped at her cheeks as she hurried across the schoolyard, her shoes crunching against the fallen leaves scattered on the ground. When she finally arrived, she spotted Vilde, Noora and Eva already seated on a low ledge. Hovering in front of them, quite literally, were Sana and Chris, both casually balanced on hoverboards, gliding back and forth as they chatted with the seated girls.
Victoria furrowed her brow at the sight. Hoverboards? Really?
"What... are those?" – she asked, her voice filled with amusement as she sat down beside Noora, interrupting whatever conversation had been happening. Her question hung in the air, causing all the girls to look at her.
Sana shot Victoria a brief smile, a hint of amusement in her eyes as she gracefully manoeuvred the hoverboard. Chris, ever the clown, twirled once in front of them before grinning widely at Victoria.
"Sana knows someone." – Chris said with a wink, not even bothering to answer directly, as if their hoverboards were the most natural thing in the world. Victoria couldn't help but laugh lightly, shaking her head at the absurdity of it all.
The conversation between the girls seemed to fizzle out as Sana glanced at her phone. She gave the group a quick polite nod and started to roll away. – "I've got to go." – she said, her flat tone, as always.
Chris followed close behind, spinning lazily on the hoverboard as she left, giving Victoria one last playful grin as if to say, You're missing out.
Victoria watched them go, shaking her head before turning her attention back to the others – just as a couple of boys strolled by. William, with his usual cool demeanour, led the way, his face unreadable as he walked with another Penetrator beside him.
Vilde immediately straightened up at the sight of William, her eyes practically lighting up. She had been hoping for more from him after what had happened last week, clearly expecting things to progress. But to her dismay, William barely spared her glance, offering only a quick "hey" before continuing past them, his tone casual, dismissive.
"Hi!" – Eva called out, more brightly now, as another pair of Penetrators approached.
Victoria, feeling for Vilde and her unreciprocated feelings, glanced at the boys. Her eyes immediately found Lucas. That familiar rush of butterflies surged through as their eyes locked, his easy smile tugging at the corner of his mouth as he noticed her.
