He had sworn to protect the young man he loved more than anything, but that cruel world had separated them like leaves in the wind.

Now, alone in his dark room, he clutched an old book with a red carnation between the pages, a symbol of his love and admiration for him. Every time he touched the flower, memories haunted him: the missed opportunities, the moments when he could have saved him.

Their impossible love, hidden and fragile, had been destroyed and he felt disappointment, disgust and finally anger. He hated himself for not being strong enough.

That young man had been brave. He had not.
