Vesper's paws hit the ground hard, his small frame racing through the alleyway as the menacing growls of the bone-hound pack echoed behind him. His heart pounded in his chest, every breath labored as he pushed his body to the limit. The creatures were relentless, their sharpened tails flicking bone projectiles that whistled past his head as he ran.
He spotted a dumpster ahead and made a split-second decision. Leaping onto it with graceful agility, he sprang off over a nearby brick wall, narrowly avoiding another volley of bone spikes. He landed hard on the other side, his body aching from exhaustion, and collapsed onto the rough pavement. For a moment, he allowed his eyes to shut, relief washing over him. He had escaped.
Or so he thought.
When Vesper opened his eyes again, they widened in horror. The bone-hound was standing right in front of him, its glowing eyes fixed on his small form. Worse still, five more bone-hounds flanked it, their tails flicking in anticipation as they prepared to strike.
Before Vesper could react, the pack lunged at him with bone-blades raised.
A deafening crack rang out.
A plasma shot screamed through the air, vaporizing the head of the lead bone-hound in an instant. Vesper barely had time to blink before the chaos unfolded. Out of nowhere, the Nanomorph descended upon the pack like a specter of death, its sleek, nanotech armor was a blur of lethal efficiency.
It tackled one bone-hound, driving its inner jaw through the creature's skull with a sickening crunch, before whipping its deadly tail to slice off the jaw of another. The remaining bone-hounds, momentarily stunned, refocused their attack on the Nanomorph, but it was too fast. Plasma casters fired in rapid succession, blowing apart two more as the Nanomorph’s claws tore into their flesh.
The final bone-hound lunged at the Nanomorph, but it met a swift end as the Unstoppable-like creature impaled it with a wrist blade before flinging its body aside like a ragdoll.
The silence that followed was deafening. Vesper, still lying on the ground, stared in awe as the Nanomorph turned its gaze on him. Its expressionless, almost alien features made it impossible to read its intentions, but it made no move to harm him.
Instead, the Nanomorph extended its tail, gently nudging Vesper toward a hole in a nearby wall. It was as if it were guiding him somewhere.
Cautiously, Vesper rose to his feet, glancing at the creature one last time before slipping through the hole. On the other side, his eyes widened in disbelief.
It was a hidden stockpile.
Food, water, and enough ammunition to arm an entire squad were stacked neatly in the small, concealed room. LMGs, rocket launchers, and crates of explosives sat among the provisions. It was clear that this wasn’t just a random stash—it had been carefully curated, placed there by none other than the Nanomorph.
Vesper hesitated, his mind racing with questions. Why had the Nanomorph saved him? Why had it stockpiled all these supplies, and for what purpose?
As he stood there, surrounded by enough firepower to take on an army, Vesper couldn’t help but wonder if the Nanomorph was more than just a killing machine. It had shown restraint, even intelligence, and it had guided him to this sanctuary.
Was it possible that the Nanomorph had its own agenda? And if so, where did Vesper and his team fit into it?
Vesper’s thoughts were interrupted as the Nanomorph appeared in the hole behind him, its tall, armored frame casting a shadow over the room. For a brief moment, their eyes met, and though the creature couldn’t speak, its actions spoke louder than words.
It was an ally—for now.
Vesper, filled with a newfound sense of hope, nodded his thanks to the Nanomorph. He quickly began gathering the supplies he could carry, knowing that his team would need them for the dangerous journey ahead. As he moved, the Nanomorph remained still, watching over him like a silent guardian.
Whatever its intentions, Vesper knew one thing for certain: they weren’t alone in this fight anymore.
